Junk shop find: 9x13 WFL tom Last viewed: 13 hours ago

I came across this 9x13 WFL tom in my favourite Toronto junk shop yesterday. It's got issues:

It's a re-wrap (see the edge photo--it looks like this was originally red sparkle

Missing muffler and mount

It looks like there are some extra holes around where the mount would have been

There's a bit of scratching around the grommet from the badge removal

The new wrap is split in one place, doesn't meet at the seam, and is lifting

It looks like there's an issue with the plies (see photo), though I'm not sure what the issue is
Still, the drum sounds beautiful, and I couldn't pass it up. I paid $70. How did I do?

Also: any idea of the drum's age? The lugs look like nickel, and from looking at the badge timeline in the Vintage Drum Guide, this badge seems to date to the late 40s or early 50s. But I'm no Ludwig expert. Anyone have a better idea of this drum's age?

I'd say you did pretty good, re-wrap considering. Your age approximation is about right. If the "new" wrap has issues, why not go back to red sparkle? I never cared for the new modern small patterns on the white and black pearls.....too small and busy to my liking. (I was never a fan of black diamond anyway) I'd say somewhere between 1948-1954 if I was to venture a guess...no ink stampings inside I gather?

BTW, we need some "junk" shops like that around here! :D

Thanks for the feedback, L-D. Yeah, this shop is a real gem: broken furniture, old lamps and bad oil paintings strewn about everywhere, and occasionally some great drums. They had an 8x12 pointy B/O badge tom in a mid-brown stain, and a 9x13 stainless steel Fibes as well. Nice little shop.

There are no markings on the interior of the drum. This tom will definitely need to be recovered. I love small-pattern pearls, so I'm thinking about doing it in BDP anyway. I recently bought four sheets of white pearl from drumjinx at a price I couldn't pass up, so I might use some of that instead.

I'm on the lookout for a bass and floor tom to complete the set, so I think I'll wait to see what I find before recovering them. If anyone knows of a 3-ply Ludwig or WFL bass or floor in need of a home, I'd love to hear about them.

By the way--how much can I expect to pay for an orphan 3-ply 22" and 16" in players' condition?
