Joseph Rogers Jr. & Son Bass Drum

I feel super lucky to have picked up this neat old drum this week. I don't know much about it yet, but I sure like it. It was advertised as a 27 in snare drum from the 50's...The shell is actually 26x15, and it is obviously not a snare drum. My quick research shows the badge is one used from the late thirties through the early 50's. It came to me in the condition you see, I just dusted it off. The calf heads are like new, and with the slightest tap the drum resonates like crazy...really an amazing instrument it that regard.

I'm wondering what it's intended use was, because the hardware doesn't seem heavy duty enough to be a marching drum, and there are no harness connectors of any kind. Maybe it would have been in a suspension mount for like an orchestra setting?

Any info the members have about it would be interesting to know.

Thanks,

AL

If there aren't any indents in the hoops then I'd say it was on a stand in the band room. Any indent from clip on spurs to tell it was a trap kit?? The Union Badge was the most popular of the 4 types offered from the transition from NJ to OH.I found a pic of the same 10 lug drum in the 1947 Grossman catalog. The catalog doesn't specify Three Star, Union, Daisy or SOO Brand. Eagle badge came about 1955. I would date that drum to be either NJ or OH. If it doesn't have an interior paper typed tag specifying model then I'd say 1947-53/54 NJ made. I have to look for my 1940 Rogers preview catalog to see if it's in there...fun homework.

Thanks so much Gary!

I love seeing those old catalogs...I guess it hasn't depreciated much in 70 years...I paid $50 for it, so that's less than $.25/year. Best thing about it (other than the price) is that my wife likes the look of it and found a spot in the living room to display it! He shoots....he scores!
