Joined Camco Family, Now What Do I Do?

Well, I swore I was stopping at 3 kits and my drum room is bursting at the seams but there I was last night driving 40 minutes in the dark with the dreaded "black ice" threat on the highways. Something told me this might be a rare chance to pickup an affordable Camco kit for a decent price, matching snare included. The are the Oaklawn Tuxedos, no fancy turrets though but...ugh the black paint on the inner shells syndrome strikes again! Don't know what I should do or not, but I drove away with them anyway. Came home to discover two T rods were replaced on the bass drum. There are also 4 extra holes in the bass drum and I doubt that is the original tom holder on there now. The wrap is nicked and the whole kit needs some rehab. I hope it was worth the investment.

Darn those attractive badges.. :)

Any advice from here on is welcome. Thanks!

Nice score from what I see. When I found mine I discovered issues once I got them home like you did. But that didn't bother me too much, I was happy to have a camco set.

The black paint can be removed, maybe not 100% but it will be better. Parts can be found, it can be pricey and expensive but they do exist. Congrats on the score and happy to hear you survived the bad road conditions.

Thank you!

Nice set. I'd leave em as is. They should sound amazing. Enjoy those beautiful drums.

I've had mine out on tour for the past 4 weeks. They hold up with no issues, sound incredible, and feel amazing. What a difference it makes when you find drums that feel so right.

It is a cool drum set, just clean and polish it up and use it as is for awhile. After a few months you will be able to make a better decision on what you want to do.

I can't speak to investment, as in "return on", but those are gorgeous! Center-lug too woo hoo!

+1 on what others have said, play em! But I would not be able to resist tackling the black interiors, no way...:)

Congratulations! Yes, those stinking badges are very alluring. :)

I'm a recent member to the Camco Moire club myself. It is a very cool finish but it is nearly impossible to find a true original moire/satin flame wrap without some cosmetic issue. The black interiors are a bummer, but since they have already been altered I don't see what harm would come from re-painting them white (assuming they are early Oaklawns). The expert restorers here can advise you on how to do that safely.

What do your badges look like? If they are original, that will help date the kit. A major bonus for you is that the original floor tom legs are there. That's like gold in the bank (okay, slight exaggeration). Also, again if early Oaklawn...good chance they are, do they have have the original rolled heavy brass hoops on the snare and toms? That would be another plus...as well as "chubby" or "fat" washers on the tension rods.

With extra holes and repainted interiors it is already a "player's" kit, as are my two Camco kits. Which I don't mind because...they can be played (and gigged).

Congrats again. Enjoy 'em.

Oh jeez, "chubby washer"? Lol... I'll check. The hoops seem heavy to me but who knows. Thanks for chiming in all. I'll get some new batter heads though, maybe Aquarians..

@Sanity - your kit looks awesome. Glad you play them out. Thanks for the kind words..

@Downtown - you're the official "black paint" guy here on VDF..thanks for the advice

@Red, Rich, JCC, Gerald - thanks, and I'll just take my time getting new heads and tuning them, etc. Though it'll be interesting to hear how them in comparison with the club dates and Slingerlands...should be a good fight to see who wins.

You did what any sane drummer would do, you risked your life driving under hazardous conditions to get them and now, you're going to spend the rest of your life playing them.

Nothing out of the ordinary... :p

Great score! Welcome to Camco Heaven!

John

Too many great drums to list here!
