John Siomos of Peter Frampton 1970's

I bought these from Judah Siomos, son of John Siomos. The two items I purchased were a custom snare and an original ching-ring.

The ching-ring looks to be original and could very well be the actual one I've seen in videos of John playing with Peter Frampton back in the 1970's.

The snare drum is not what we think of today as far as a custom drum. The shell appears to be a late sixties/ seventies Gretsch 6 ply shell. The only thing I can see that is different is that the drum was drilled for a Rogers strainer & butt plate. The plaque reads "Custom Built For John Siomos by Paul Jamieson". At the bottom it gives the date 12-76 and the number 003.

I did some research on Paul Jamison and what I was able to come up with was that he is a drum cartage company and he did these snare drums on the side. At some point he started using Radio King shells and gave the drum a sunburst finish. It also appears that all the work was actually done by a very young at the time Pat Foley.

Originally I was going to display the drum as is but there is far too much corrosion on the hardware and collar hoops to let it go. So I will be cleaning it up a bit and giving it new heads and wires. Since it has a Ludwig silver dot on the batter I'm going to replace it with the same.

Thanks very much for the history lesson. A great time for music. I didn't know who Frampton was until his live LP was released. I have it on my 100+ hours of music on my hard drive so it seems like a good time to give is another spin. Great story + research.

Judah Siomos dug up a 5 year old post on DFO that I had started about his father John. The post was about his dark green B/O Ludwigs. He responds to the thread stating that he has those drums and that they are for sale.

What???? So I sent a pm. Turns out he had a Slingerland BDP kit in the Ludwig cases. Darn! So he sent me pics of everything. Although the snare drum is in rough condition, it was the only thing that really documented the drum to John because of the brass plate/plaque attached. I also wanted the Ching-ring as I have seen a video of him using one.

So we agreed on a price and now it't in my personal collection. For me this is the equivalent of owning John Bonham's snare. Siomos was my first major influence and I still listen to Frampton Comes Alive in awe of his drumming. IMO he's the main reason that album is so good!

I almost positive ,that those green Ludwigs were sold on Ebay a few years ago.I don't remember the sizes ,or the final price,but the seller claimed to have provenance for the drums,once belonging to John Siomos.

Anyway,great score on the snare and ching ring.It's great that a piece of rock and roll hostory, went to someone who'll appreciate them,and not some hack just looking to flip them.

Disclaimer:Not that there's anything wrong with flipping drums,but in this case,they were played by a great drummer,who became part of Rock n" Roll history.

I was told the dark green Ludwigs did hit Ebay around 1999 or 2000 just prior to me joining. If memory services they went for around $1500-$2000 and they were in rough shape.

I posted the pic on Frampton's FB page. He actually commented and wants to contact me thru email. I'm hoping he has pics to share with me.

Here the drum is in it's new resting place on top of my snare drum cabinet. I had to clean this one as much as I wish I could've just placed it from the box to the shelf. I left all the battle scars and the dirt that is deep into the shell. I basically just gave her a bath! There was so much corrosion on the collar hoops that I needed to replace the heads. The wires also needed replacing as they were bent far beyond their means.
