Hey - I picked up a supposedly vintage drum from around the 60's, from a pawn shop for 99 (australian) dollars, it has a John Grey and Sons Broadway badge, six T-rod lugs per face, a small cymbal mount, adjustable pre-muffler, a handle-looking attachment, and two dodgy legs ... for some reason, the sizing is like something between 20.5 and 21.5, depending on how i measure it, by 12 deep ... it has an aqua blue sparkley finish, by the way. I'm just wondering if I got ripped off? I can't find anything on the net about it, cept for a picture of the same badge somewhere ... if anybody can help me identify this thing's original intended quality, or its current price, OR anything really, I'd be incredibly glad. Although i've got to say I love the sound it has, it's just there may come a day where i'll need new heads for it and you know ... remo don't stock 20.5 inch heads ... Cheers =)
John Grey & Sons bass drum ... 20.5x12?!?!
*sigh* ... the size of an inch hasn't changed since the 50's, has it?? Thing is, this drum's too big for 20" heads, too small for 22" heads ... BAH!!!
I'd just play it as it is - the head will probably last forever - is it calf? If it breaks which is unlikely keep the flesh hoop (the wood hoop the calf skin is lapped onto) and get a fresh head lapped. Australia must be FULL of suitable vellums. Email forum member Capt.Weird for more advice on odd size english drums... But if you are seriously rich Remo will make anything you want..
Okay, well I've determined the drum is exactly 21" but the only sizes mentioned in the catalogues you sent me the link to are 20" or 22" ... which is strange, since the lugs and stuff are the same, although on this one there's a handle and the cymbal mount so ... I don't think it's a fake. And I'm not sure if remo or anybody would make a custom size head for me :\ hah could be worth a try, though. Thanks man
Yes, I think Remo WILL make you a custom head.
