Happy new year, wonderful vintage drum lovers. I really love this place and I've been in and outta here for over 10 years. I appreciate all your expertise.

I should know this by now, but what was John Bonham's setup for the recording of Led Zeppelin's first two album, Self-Titled and Zep II..?

Bonham's "sound" was just so incredible. I know it was Ludwig, but what make and snare..? Thanks to everyone.

Here's a good reference for JHB gear: http://www.johnbonhamdrums.com/

I've ambiguous what kit was used for the first album. The two most popular theories are that he either used the Slingerland kit that was rented for the Scandinavian tour, or he used a back line kit at Olympic Studio, possibly a Premier. He used his Thermogloss kit for the second album, and possibly some or all of the four "electric" songs on the third album, as they were recorded before Page and Plant went on their retreat to Bron-Yr-Aur. This was right around the time he received his green sparkle kit from Ludwig that he used for LZ4, Houses, and Physical Graffiti, and possibly the later albums as well. Others claim that he used the Thermogloss exclusively on LZ3 and part of LZ4. It's really a shame that they didn't keep better track of such important things like that. They should have known in 1970 that people would be discussing the minute details of his gear on an internet forum fifty years later.

Haha, thanks for the information. And for the website. I'm severely deficient when it comes to Bonham trivia.

Or it could've been a Ludwig BDP 24" 13 16&18' floor toms or his Ludwig green sparkle 22 13&16&5" Supraphonic which inho&ho (,honest& humble opinion) are leaning towards either the Slingerland (which wasn't his kit it was Jim MCarty's Yardbirds kit) or his earlier Ludwig green sparkle. For cymbals on 1st album either GB's A Zildjians or 602's.
