Joe Morello Technique

Loading...

During the past several weeks, I have been studying the techniques of Joe Morello, especially pertaining to his work with Dave Brubeck. I have come to a sobering conclusion. Although I consider myself a good rock drummer, compared to Mr. Morello, I should go back to kindergarten. He could do more with his left hand than I can with both of mine! Have any of you guys ever felt this way about drumming greats? Damn, he was good!!!

I use to feel that way all the time. I remember going to clinics with Dave Weckle, Denice Chambers and many other great drummers and instead of coming away with some knowledgeable information, I came away feeling inferior. To the point of thinking, I should just quit because I'll never achieve their greatness.

Then I saw a video with Kenny Arnoff and he said something that has stuck with me for many years, as long as you have your passion you will be successful.

Words to live by no matter what you're doing.

You are so right, my friend! The operative word is "passion". Thanks for giving my head a well deserved shake!!!
