Jazzfest found in Pawn Shop

Loading...

I found a 1969 Ludwig standard 5 piece at a garage sale for $75. They had to be wrapped so I changed them to classic lugs instead of the standard lugs. There are about 3 pawn shops here that I check pretty regulerly. When I bought this snare I saw a paiste ride cymbal in there for $75. I came home and researched it and went and got it today. lol. 20" Paiste Heave Bell Ride. I get calls for paiste cymbals on rentals.

Poppy, I remember you posting pics of that set a while back! They do look good, and I for one appreciate your "creativity" in re-making them into "classic" drums! Sometimes you just pick up things that CANNOT be brought back to original conditon, so why not be "creative!"

Ok, what's the difference between Jazzfest and super classic? The throw and bottom hoops is all I can see difference. I'm at home for lunch. When I get home this evening I'm going to give them both a good comparison, unless my other one isnt a jazzfest either:(

I'm sure you have already figured it out ... but just in case ...That's actually not a 908P Ludwig Jazz Festival Model snare. It's a 900P Ludwig Super Classic Model snare. It's printed on the label inside the drum.

Sometimes you can find stuff at pawn shops but I have been really fortunate in my area on Craigs List. I have acquired two of my nicest vintage sets and some wonderful cymbals, and a great rare supraphonic here from CL. for peanuts. Being in South east Florida you get people from all over. Retirees who want to get rid of stuff, or people pass away and put things on CL. I just missed a vintage 5 piece Slingerland set on CL. Some girl bought it at a garage sell for $25 and sold it on CL for $50. It was gone like in minutes. I told her I would have given her a lot more than $50. Had the metal snare, 2 toms, floor tom, Bass and hardware. was a black lacquer set that looked like it just needed cleaning. Black Niles Badges. I also have a good friend of mine who is in charge of a large Goodwill store in Orlando and he calls me anytime a set comes in. Nothing worth having yet but good to have eyes in there just in case.

That is a fabulous idea!! Now I'll be on a mission to find silver glitter glue!! LOL

From larryvonludwig

Great idea! I've done the same myself. There's a modeler's product called Crystal Clear that works well filling in small divits, holes in wrap. ( used to make windows in planes, cars, etc.) Goes on like elmer's glue, can span gaps with a thin coating and dries clear. You can tint it too.

You pretty much hit it on the head for the snares offered in 71. Bottom hoop and the throw. That's really about it. Both shipped with 18 strand wires and both had the same number and type of lugs, etc, etc. But, if you look at that label inside the snare ... it's clearly marked "900", which is a Super Classic.

The funny thing is, the Standard snare is actually closer to being a Jazz Festival snare than the Super Classic ... and yet there is a pretty serious "value" gap between them. That kinda stuff cracks me up and keeps this whole drum thing entertaining.

Hahaha ... yeah, pretty much. This is one of the many reasons I don't get caught up in that whole overpriced Ludwig JazzFest game. I have a sweet Standard in Gold Strata with classic lugs. Other than the badge, it's a JF. Pretty funny stuff.

I also have a standard with classic lugs. I have another standard that is bare wood that came with a drum a kit I bought. I am planning on wraping it in mod orange or something cool. This classic was $79. I just had to have it.

Ill leave the classic alone and leave the standard lugs on the standard snare. Then Ill have a Jazzfest, a classic, a standard, a supra, super sensitive, acrolite, blackrolite, and a vistalite. I sold my pioneer with a kit a while back. I wish I had kept it now lol...Ill have to do a little rearranging and display all these together. I alos have a few late model luddy steel snares, cheap ones......

I went and got some glitter glue and some silver glitter yesterday. I am going to experiment with it. I have another theory. I am gonna mix some large silver glitter with epoxy and see if that works. I think the epoxy will be much stronger that the glitter glue, since the glitter glue is water soluable..

Im having gum surgery this morning and am not going to work today. After I get home Im planning on messing with this. Im trying to decide whether to plug the holes with dowel rod or not. I get a dowel rod a little bigger than the hole and put it in a drill and sand it to a taper, then hammer it into the hole. If I do this Ill hammer it in a little further to leave room for the glitter.

THis will be pretty tricky on a 3 ply shell, however the epoxy glitter might be enough with a little wood filler on the inside of the shell. I will experiment on a orphan shell. Should be an interesting experiment. I have 4 orphan silver sparkle 6 ply shells with the rivets. Im going to exxperimment on one of those. I am also going to see it its possible to get some silver sparkles from the wrap on the orphan shell. Who knows??? guitar2
