Jazz left side rides...thick or thin?

Loading...

Hey guys, for the jazzers out here, I'm curious to get your thoughts. Regarding the all important left side ride, do you tend to prefer a cymbal that is thin and crashable, or a bit heavier with a more defined ping? The downside of the pingy pie will be that it's not as crashable in most cases. As reference, I'm talking small group jazz and not big band.

I am by NO means a good jazz drummer. Of course, in the 48 years I've spent behind the kit, I'm not what you would call a good drummer in any genre. But, I do play jazz ... and with that said, I like ALL cymbals to function as both crashes and rides. So, I guess I would fall into the medium thin to thin category.

I see what you mean. I'm leaning towards thinner as well...

Don't go too thin. You'll wash out and loose definition.

I've gone to a larger cymbal size setup...Trying to decide between a 22" that is around 2600 grams and another 22" around 2300 grams. Both hammered pies. Decisions...

Awesome. nice weights. I've played two 22's. It's a nice way to go.

I've gotten thicker over the years but when I was thinner I played what I could afford. Now that I am thicker( not my wallet mind you---leave that to Billy Gibbons), I try to let the cymbal guide me. I prefer smallish ---no more than 19" and as flexible between ride and crash as possible. I recently came across a 1500(approx.) gram one that was too good not to notice.

My main ride is a 24"...so one of these 22" Spizz's will be on left. I own both and may try and keep both if I can. New setup for me...
