For future reference-did the upper rering break cleanly from the shell,or was it a major ,gluey mess? It's very cool that the 5 1/4" dimension made the holes re-useable!

Fantstic job and beautiful drum!!! I was also wondering how difficult it was removeing the re-ring, or was it ready to come out. and your procedure.
That is impressive and I too am curious about the re ring removal. Excellent work sir!
Bill, very cool project and nicely done! So, how did the ring come off? And,, is Bermuda sand the wrap closest to champain sparkle?
YOu have given me some ideas, I have a couple marching drum shells here sitting around, hmmmmmm.

Well done my friend.

A quick reply -- lunch is over and I've got a lot of work to do! (School starts back up here in two weeks!)
The top re-ring did NOT come out easy. All I can say is it was well-glued in to begin with. AFTER I removed it, carefully with a very sharp chisel (and believe me a LOT of that mahogany inner-ply wanted to stay put), several on here commented on using steam to loosen it all up (on another thread a few months back). That IS what I'll do next time, and with the attention this project has drawn from potential customers I WILL be doing this again as I've got several more 10x14 shells.
As for the wrap, Precision has a "modern bermuda sand" at the moment -- but it's quite a bit different than this which is actually an older piece of champagne sparkle that I got from Jammin' Sam (and it wasn't cheap). I don't have time to look it up, but on another thread some time back I posted pics of both the "modern bermuda sand" and the old "champagne sparkle" if anyone cares to look it up.
I want to thank everyone who's commented positively!
Got to get back to work,
Bill

Very impressive, Bill...great job!
Very nice Bill! That turned out beautiful.

Nice looking drum! Just throwing it out there for the re-ring removal. Couldn't you set the depth on a table saw to the shell thickness and do a bunch of passes to remove the shell from the ring? Borrowing from mountainhick's inlay thread a bit, a backstop clamped to the saw to allow you to spin the shell over the blade would probably make short work of that ring removal. Finally, as you already know I am sure, a dado head assembly would expedite the process even more!
toodles

Absolutely beautiful! What a fantastic idea for bringing an otherwise unused drum back to life. Well done!
