Jazz Festival BDP... which year ???

Loading...

Hi everybody, please help me identify which year this 5" x 14" "Jazz Festival" BDP is from.

I have just purchased it and it does not have a serial number badge. The seller said that the grommet inside is untouched though. The rims (COS) are not original, according to the seller. I'm wondering if maybe the original ones where NOB or COB?

Curious for an answer!

One thing I know for sure is that at least it's not a pre-serial era, because the strainer is not mounted one lug next to the grommet hole. So it must be after 1963. Am I right ?? or ??

Anyway, when I read the section about serial numbers on this forum, Frederick Ludwig himself had once admitted after having being asked about "Keystone Badges", that sometimes they would use left over badges from earlier years, and put them on recently manufactured drum shells. Or use earlier manufactured drum shells (with earlier time stamps inside the shell), and give them a brand new "Keystone Badge".

This means that the serial number of one drum would not always correspond to the year of when the same drum's shell was made!

I also read that Slingerland sometimes also used older materials on new drums, just to get rid of it : ) That's funny! But it's history! With this in mind, I don't feel so guilty, giving this Jazzy drum a new identity. After all, it is a Ludwig creation and it deserves to have a new life! Even though it will always be a bastard snare of course... : )

Picture 2 shows the badge that I have just purchased. It has the number: 18008, from 1964.

From vintagemore2000

the white basball bat muffler was on ludwig drums from 1964 on, so the date would be correct!

Great, thanks for the info!

I will soon show my other two drums that are part of the same serial number family. A 22" inch BDP kick and a 13" BDP tom from 1964. Well, soon a BDP 16" tom will be arriving to HK and then I will start to gather all the "Keystone drums" that I have gotten from the US.
