I recently acquired a black maple 'pork pie- little squealer' snare drum. Its a heavy little snare and from what I've seen they go for about $200... anybody have any experience with these?

I have never used one of these. Pork-Pie seems to sell a lot of drums. I have looked at some of their snares in GC, and they seem to be of very good quality, especially for the price. If you like it, it was a good price.

I picked up a 13x7 little squealer a few years ago on a whim but I just couldn't get into the sound from that size. Definitely me and not the drum. It was a decent quality drum. I just don't dig 13" snares I suppose.

13" snares are perfect for back up in the event your main snare breaks down. I keep one in the bottom of my floor tom case, you never know....I found out the hard way once on a gig my snare throw off broke, and I Had to borrow a snare from the band in front of us. embarrassing, but now I come prepared.

First if all, I think it is a great idea for a drummer to have a variety of snare drums. There are snare drums that are more versatile than others but no one snare drum can really do it all. Snare drums are generally not that expensive so anytime you can pick up another snare, that is a very good thing. If you find you never use it, then sell it and get one that you do.

Pork Pie makes very nice drums and were on the leading edge of the current raft if custom builders. They also have a line of Taiwanese made knock-offs that they typically sell at places like GC. I am not sure where that drum was manufactured.

If it is a 13" and heavy, it is mainly designed to be tuned tight and should be quite loud and have a bunch of crack to it. Gospel players tend to really favor those types of sounds. Works well for Police covers as well. Of course, you can do more with it. As with all drums, spend some time with it and see what it does and does not do well. That way you will know what you have available in your arsenal.
