I recently posted a Disappointed in Appraisal thread in the General Questions & Topics Forum. The background is there if interested.....I don't want to double post.

Initially I was unhappy with the value of my 1958 Gretsch drums. But! - the good side.....the "silver-lining" is that I can recover or "hot-rod" these drums and not decrease the value.

My plans are to recover the drums at some point - when I grow tired of the Gold Sparkle - that may never happen. However, my favorite is Champagne Sparkle OR better yet....if I find good wood under this Gold Sparkle I may opt to do a nice syrupy Maple gloss or matt.

I'm happy with the drums at the appraised $2000 value. They're nice drums and probably only worth more than that to me.

"Recover and not decrease value"? How do you do that?

Re-finishing will most certainly decrease the value...

Gretsch are great drums regardless of who appraises them. The bottom line is the SOUND! Sound and playability is what it is all about. Who cares what some so-called 'expert' thinks. Years ago I purchased a vintage muscle car. I asked the guy I bought it from what he thought the 'real' value might be. his reply? WHATEVER SOMEONE IS WILLING TO PAY FOR IT.

I love the gold sparkle with the black BD reso head. Cool look. Reminds me of this pic.

Enjoy them, whichever way you go.

All I'm saying is the appraised value is $2K & no matter what I do to the drums...in a positive way of course...they're not going to be worth less than that. I've got them appraised for insurance purposes - in case of fire/theft that sort of thing - I'm not selling them.

I realize some may pay a large amount of money for drums like these - however, that's not going to help me if for one...I'm not selling & two....they're appraised at $2K.

Also.....I may never re-wrap them....but it is comforting to know if I do re-warp them they're not going to go from $5K down to $2.5K if you know what I mean.

If a doctor wanted to amputate your left arm because you are right handed, you would get a second opinion. Respected appraiser or not..... you need a second opinion before you make a huge mistake.

2000.00 "on paper" for insurance purposes no matter what you do to the drums works but technically the vintage of those drums is tainted and will reflect that when and if you go to sell the drums.

They are worth 2.000 in original condition that is what makes them valuable re wrap them or refinish them and you will be lucky to get 1/2 of that amount.
