Is this set worth buying?

Loading...

I'm looking at buying this set. In the ad it states '70's Niles badges 8pc Slingerland with two 24" bass drums with a Pearl Chad Smith Snare. What are your thoughts? I really dig the power toms and the size of the bass drums, but what I don't know is the quality of the set?? I thought maybe someone would possibly know what this set is and if it's a good investment or not at $500-$600 for the shell pack. Thank you all ... I know I'm a pain in the arse.

I've never had a Slingy kit that was newer than late sixties. Do the toms have reinforcement hoops? This might indicate 3 plys toms. I don't know if they made anything 3 ply that big. The snare is newer and that's OK. If you like the sizes, sound and you can set the kit up the way you like it with the included hardware, $500.00 is an OK buy. It's a lot of stuff for $500.00. However, I must ask, are you gonna gig this kit? It's a monster! Do you have a one-ton van. I have a set of 1993 Luddies, they are six ply and they sound great. They are in regular sizes.. 22, 13, 16x16. The later six ply Ludwigs from the nineties sound really great, especially for rock music. I have about 450.00 in the three drums. I bring them up because they are not vintage but sound great and if you don't need such a big kit, you probably can find others, used in your price range.

I'm sure the shells aren't 3-ply. They are probably a birch/mahogany blend of 6-8 ply shells. Seems to be the norm of these older 'rock' kits. The snare sells for about $150 used itself. I don't know what they want for the entire setup, but $500 is reasonable for the shell pack. I would think $800-$1000 would be a reasonable asking price on this monster. The hardware looks really heavy, I'm guessing they aren't Slingerland cymbal stands all around.

If you plan to gig, I hope you realize that you are looking at, at least an hour set up time before a show. If you are just sticking it in your music room, then it will look pretty impressive!

Hope this helped!

Thanks both!! Yeah I know what I'm in for if I take this out on gigs. I highly doubt I would bring it all unless it was a larger venue. The tom sizes are 12,13,14,15,18 and 20 which really makes this kit a 9 pc kit. I still have to go look at this Slingerland set though. I think it's a pretty good deal, but like I said, I don't know if it's a set that has collectiblity to it due to the sizing or is that in itself what could make it sought after someday?

Personally, I think the best vintage kits, value wise and player wise, lie in the 60s era and before.

Ok ... so I looked in the awesome badge identification so when I look at these drums this weekend, I can tell the difference between the import Slingerlands and the true USA ones, or were there imported Slingerlands with the same badges?

I thought the imports just said slingerland on them. Nothing about Niles, Illinois but had the same look.
