This just popped up on my local classifieds... says the drum is 100% original except heads - no mods. Is that finish for real? Seems too good to be true.

They lied.
Look at the grommet. It has been removed. Original cover removed. Drum has been refinished.
A 55 year old drum would have some aging on the finish. This one does not.

100% Original.... what's there maybe. Except for the missing wrap on the shell that is. Interesting to hear what he says when you mention that little fact.

There is a seam behind the badge? It looks like contact paper. There more than likely wouldn't be a nice huge knot on the outer ply like that. I would put money on it being contact paper. I wonder what's under it?

NO factory would put any seam right under the badge! They drill the badge in the nicest part of the shell! Not the worst!
If it is cheap enough it might be fun to play around with, but I'm sure the seller of this "100% original" drum wants top dollar...

They're asking $350. I wondered about the knot as well.

I've got no skin in this, but I would not offer more than half asking price.
Since there is contact paper on there, there could be a wrap-removal nightmare under it with huge chunks of shell veneer missing and filled with Bondo or something...
Price it on the value of the parts you can see and identify. Even the badge has some damage to it...

That drum was probably in a painted finish originally, blue/silver or black/gold.
That is contact paper on the outside, for sure.
Looks like a Classmate model, a 13" drum. With those clip hoops and low-end strainer and cable snares, it's not a useful drum. It was originally intended as a very entry-level drum for the kids to practice rudiments.
The seller obviously has no clue, and thinks anything with an old Rogers badge is gold.
The drum is not worth $50, never mind $350.

I never considered buying it at any price. I was just curious about it's authenticity. The seller claims he was told by the last owner that it was all original but he has now revised his ad and lowered the price to $250 (ha!)
