Is this a fake Ludwig on eBay?

Loading...

I am a little confused. Check out this auction...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290594926963

The badge looks like the pointy blue and olive with no serial number. That would put it around '71 or '72.

Yet, Ludwig didn't make anything but the 3 ply shell until 1976 or so.

And, the lugs have a round cutout in the back like they are from an acrolite.

Any comments on this?

Thanks

When I viewed it, it said it was sold for $199 + $15 shipping. Maybe the ad is fake as well as the drum...???

Yeah... guess who?

I emailed him as soon as I noticed (unfortunately, after I made the offer). I have not heard from him yet but I hope to catch him before he ships it.

I can't believe I didn't catch it immediately.

I sent a very detailed message describing the reasons why the drum is not a real Ludwig and asking to cancel the auction and refund the payment.

His reply was, "Thanks again".

We may be dealing with an idiot, here. That happens sometimes on eBay.

Hopefully, he'll understand before it ships.

Ebay....... sometimes the magic works. Sometimes it doesn't.

As long as you paid with Paypal you are protected. Regardless if the seller says he does not refund or take returns. Ebay will force him to through Paypal. If he sent it and refuses to take it back file a complaint with ebay , "Item not as described", send it back WITH A TRACKING NUMBER. Put the tracking number in with the ebay complaint and on Paypal and you will get refunded minus shipping.

And be sure to leave a negative. Nobody deserves to be ripped off by clowns like this.

Wow-someone went to a great deal of trouble building a fake Ludwig snare drum.I'd have been hard pressed to tell it wasn't except for the Acrolite lugs and the Red Onyx.It looks like they even used a grommet tool to set the grommet and badge. It's too bad, because he might have legitimitely got his money for a custom snare with Acrolite hardware. His 25 paragraphs of disclaimers basically say you own it-hopefully Paypal will honor the buyer in this deception.Good luck-

If this was a cut down early 70's Ludwig marching snare recovered in Red Onyx, what would it be?I mean, besides non original.

on top of what has already been mentioned, that's not a Ludwig grommet. The shell doesn't look like Ludwig either. The plies are too symmetrical and there are more than 6 of them.

Piece of cake. He refunded my PayPal payment immediately and I agreed to cancel the auction so he could get his eBay fees refunded.

I'm a real eBay supporter. It's not always perfect but I find that, if you read and follow the rules, this kind of thing is usually well protected.

I even spent the time to detail everything I could about the drum so he wouldn't have the same problem with the next buyer. I explained the lugs were from an acrolite and about the badge and the shell, etc.

The badge is a pointy edge blue and olive so that pretty much narrows it down to '71 - '72 (theoretically). I don't think Ludwig made a shell without re-rings until the late 70's did they?

His reply was, "If the next buyer can read, I shouldn't have any problems".

So, he went ahead and relisted it as a "rare" Ludwig. LOL He says, "The coating or cover of the shell may have been rewrapped-recolored, which means I do not know if this color was the original Ludwig wrap so if this is an issue, DO NOT BID! "

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Ludwig-Snare-Drum-70s-w-stand-Gorgeous-RARE-/290595693872?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item43a8da6530

So many obvious things on this drum that I can't believe I fell into it like I did.

It's too bad he's still selling it as a Ludwig. Someone's going to get ripped.
