Is this a brass shell MIJ? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

OK, I may have come across a bit rude, but was not my intention. I am aware it's a MIJ snare and MIJ doesn't particularly interest me so it's all blah, blah, whatever. Star, Pearl, who give's a $*#%. I just want to know if it's brass. Thanks for weighing in on it. I appreciate it. I really do, but I just wanted to know if it's brass or steel. I didn't ask the seller if it was brass. I had a feeling the seller wouldn't know. It was an impulse buy at 12 dollars.

Okay, Chomeo, all is good. If you say that it was not your intention to come across "a bit rude", that's good enough for me. You say that you appreciate people "weighing in". Again, that's a positive response and appreciated. I hope your new drum is brass and that you are really happy with it! Best of luck, sir!

I bet you Gurus a steak dinner that this thing is brass. It even has those dings that you see on brass shells. I'm telling you, this is a Sound King knock-off. :)

Thanks Brian. I suppose I set myself up for it, knowing everyone was going to say it's a steel drum. I was hoping somebody would say it's a brass shell because I still think there's chance it's brass, but it's probably steel and I'll have to report back here and tell all you guys that you were right and I was wrong and be made to look the fool. I don't know why i ask for a second opinion when I'm so stubborn in the first place and just disagree with everyone. :)

I'll keep you posted on the snare and if it's brass or not.

No way! You can have a moderately priced steak dinner like everyone else or you can fill up on bread. And tap water is fine. :P

I've owned many of those in years gone by. There's always the possibility that I'm wrong, but if so please show me to be wrong and I'll plead guilty to 'jumping the gun' based on false assumptions. (It won't hurt my feelings! I learn something new everyday about vintage drum equipment.)Quite often what appears as "brass" is in fact the copper plating applied to steel which is showing either due to age and wear, or due to being the area held when the metal was dipped into to the chromium plating, therefore not taking being well chromed in that area. I have presently a very heavy steel shell "Dixie" snare made by Pearl, which has a large section of the interior shell unchromed with a brass-like or 'orange' appearance demonstrating this. My drum, like yours shown in your photos, is dented where it took hard knocks along the years when it was either dropped or shaken around in the bottom of trap during transport.I am posting a photo of the drum I mention as an exampleBy the way, I'm sure your drum sounds nice. My critique should in no way be taken as a slight of the drum's performance worthiness.

You were right. It's steel! It arrived today. Steak dinners all around are cancelled! That was an empty gesture! :D

I still think it's a good looking drum. One of the nicer steel MIJ snares I've come across. It really looks like a Slingerland Sound King.

As far as I know the first brass shell Star, (and badged as whatever), was the dual action model... this came out a few years later...

(Oh and I knocked over a nice T bone last night)..

Cheers

Nice drum! Hope you can get that dent out at the throw. Yes indeed that is a very good clone of the Slinger SK. I hope to find one like that some day. Just not a priority right now as I have a couple like that referenced Dixie (mine are 10 luggers that sound great too). So, I am 'all set' in that category! Watched a video of mine 20 mins ago and was reminded how good my (Majestic) Pearl made steel shell sounds.

Sorry - point is - looks like you got a bargain for $12 and I hope to get one too someday.

Congrats! Love the back and forth - appreciate all you guys!

Must say - that I never knew that some chrome Star snares were BRASS??? Anyone have a pic of one of those?

-John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
