I have been looking for a thin original 15" leedy hardwhite head for some time. i found one that is slightly larger, but too big using its current hoop. is it possible to soak the head in water to remove it from the current hoop, then re-tuck it on my hoop, which is only a half inch smaller? thx jim

You - bet. Just make sure - if you're going to trim the hide after soaking - that you're hide is at least 4" larger in diameter than what you need. If you want the head to be 15" then you're going to need a 19" hide to start with before you tuck it to the flesh-hoop.

I've bought a few used hides that came to me tucked onto their original flesh-hoops and I was able to use them by soaking them and removing them from the flesh-hoops, cut them down and tuck them onto smaller flesh-hoops. The one that worked the best for me was a 22" 50's Ludwig head. I cut it down and tucked it onto a 20" hoop that I use with my 58 Gretsch kit. I even cut and shaved (the pointy parts) the original 22" wood flesh-hoop and custom fit it to my 20" bass drum. Works like a damn.

I say if the hide soaks off the flesh-hoop and the part that you use has what looks to be some life....give....and natural glue left in it - it should work.

Let me know if you have any more questions. PM or email me too if you like.

Thanks! I just bot the head. I've tucked a couple, but never untucked.

If you have a problem with slippage on the hoop-----use some crazy glue. It was originally engineered for use with skin, so it works like crazy!

I am a bit worried about this head, simply due to the minor size difference.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/260922643243?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_500wt_1030

The hoop is 15.5 inches on the inside and mine is slightly over 15. I'm fairly certain that the one I just bought will not fit my drum as-is. I have a metal hoop, just like the ebay picture, so I'll have to soak and remove the calf from the old hoop and fit it on to mine. There won't be much room for error, but I have been looking for this head for several months.

Thanks

Jim

Hey guys,

I have a couple of 10" calf heads that have detensioned durind the years. I can fit them on a drum, I can get them to sound good, just that there`s a area that has wrinkles, and that bothers me . Do you think i can re-tuck the existing calf on the original flesh hoops?

I think you should be able to if it's got any elasticity left in it. It would not hurt to try if it's not too brittle.
