This is a picture of a very old drum that hasn't been built yet. Our home was built in the 1850's and through extensive structural remodeling some old 2' thick pine planking has been removed. Through a chance encounter through this forum and C/L a local member has hand crafted a beautiful stave shell from one of those planks. My plan is to retro-build this drum using as much old and/or old style hardware as is economically feasible and dedicate it to the two main instigators to my drumming career- my Grandfather and his friend, my first drum instructor. Single flange or stick-chopper hoops, tube lugs and a good quality old-style throw. The shell is really high level construction, and is exactly as I'd asked for detail-wise.

That shell is beautiful! Going to be a great drum and the old reclaimed wood the best part.

The drum is 5 1/2 X 14 and approximately 3/8" thick-quite thin for a stave drum. The builder is on the forum and goes by hemidemisemiquaver. Just a nice all around guy and cleverly built home jigs for his shells. Also, in keeping with the "retro" build,I have 8 of these bakelite lugs of undetermined brand. If I had 2 more I could use them on the build. Anyone have two, or at least know what brand they are?

Hey, I just saw this thread and that looks just like my router!

I have to mention how ironic it is that I ended up building a shell for the man who's previous thread on this forum started me in a new direction with my drumming. After seeing his post here titled "Why? Stave drum construction" I said to myself "why not" and that got me started on my new path. I put a few shells up on the local CL and got a reply with a request to build a shell from a gentleman a few towns over with a whole bunch of lumber from his circa 1850 home. After a bit of correspondence we made arrangements to see the lumber in his amazing humongous barn that housed much of his extensive drum collection. During the visit we brought up the VDF and I couldn't believe that after exchanging our "forum" names that I was going to build a shell for the man who got me started on this whole drum building venture. Thank you teverson-sr. I hope the shell is everything you hoped for and I can't wait to see it completed and to hear it. The best part of this irony has been making a new friend.

Well,to update...the bakelite lugs are a dead-end so far. I ordered single-point lugs from DFD and a Ludwig strainer, butt and brass snares from Musicians Friend. If I do locate 2 more lugs I can just replace the single-point lugs, as the bakelites have 1 mounting hole also. I already have 2 single flange hoops and an assortment of various rim hooks. Just finish on the shell,heads and assembly.

I'd like to add that HDSQ is right-it's so much about the new friendships.

and PS...his exotic wood stave shells are made by him alone,at his house and are top-notch.
