Information about my Vintage Gretch set

Loading...

Hi All,

About a month ago I got home from work and I discovered my very first Gretsch drum set on my front porch. My father cleaned out the attic and he discovered it covered. He had told me he had thrown it away a while ago. I have tried to do some research and cant really find much to pin point when it was made. It is a round badge so I know it was made before 1970, but there are no numbers on it at all. the sizes are 20"x14" Bass drum 12"x9" tom and 18"x16" floor tom. I can't find much info on the 18" floor tom as they appear to mostly be 16".

I have spent the past few weeks cleaning it up using the awesome info on this forum. I have included pics. Anyone who could estimate the manufacturer date and what the value may be I would truly appreciate it.

It's likely a 1950s kit, probably all 3-ply shells. If it has clear wood interiors, it's from the earlier part of that decade, silver interiors from the later part, and silver interiors with paper stickers from the very early 60s.

The original bass hoops appear to have been replaced, and there may be some non-factory spurs added, but beyond that, it looks to be in pretty good condition at first glance, congrats! I'd value it around $2000 to $2700 or so depending on some of the details, it's an awesome little kit. The 18 will get a lot of drummers drooling about converting it to a bass drum, since 18" round badge bass drums are some of the most valuable drums around.

Heck, I'd like to talk about buying the toms! Feel free to message me!

Wow

I am glad he didn't throw it away!

That's a beauty.

Looks like maybe 1950's but I am just guessing because of the rims.

Sorry can't help you at all not an expert on anything.

Definitely 50's, it will be 3-ply shells. The Gladstone brackets on the floor tom are a giveaway, as are the rims. Lacquer finish, right? So much cooler than black wrap.

It's an uncommon configuration, with the 18" drum. Actually it's a bit uncommon for a 50's kit to have a 20" kick for that matter. The rack tom will be an 8x12, they didn't produce 9x12's back then. I agree with Poppie's assessment for the value.

You might check to see if the rear spur brackets look like they are factory original, or if the woodwork is rougher than those in the front. Sometimes Gretsch did custom stuff like that, but it looks like the spurs don't match so I'm guessing your father did it himself years ago.

Nice drums!

That is an odd size but it does make me wonder... I had a 1957 WFL set once that I grabbed at a yard sale for 300 bucks. It was 14x20, 9x13, 18x20 with Buddy Rich snare in silver glass. Was an odd configuration for sure but clearly some people must have wanted for some reason.

Can't imagine there's a drum set in your house and you didn't know it was there!

The set was given to me as a Christmas gift when I was 8 in 1978. At some point I got a larger set and I never thought about the Gretch until a few years ago I mentioned it to my Dad and he said he thought he threw it out. I have been out of my parents house for 25 years and have had many sets in between. Believe me this was a pleasant surprise!!

Beautiful finish. Looks like later 80s hoops from an SSB drum were added on.
