IF you're looking for Pearl FG drums

Loading...

First of all, let me say that another thread under a different heading (http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=32625) prompted me to start this thread.

Since I have a passion for Pearl Fiberglass and Wood-Fiberglass drums of the 1970s, I'm always looking for them, frequently buying them, and then of course repairing/refurbishing/restoring/re-whatever and then re-selling them usually to others that have a similar passion or interest in them. I've sold sets and orphans alike, and have helped many other Pearl FG & W/FG "fans" find that missing piece for their set.

But, like just about any and everything else, there are those "out there" that will jump into the "business" of selling these things, and they're not ashamed to "sell you a bill of goods."

Some current eBay examples:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pearl-Fiberglass-16x16-Floor-Tom-Drum-Rare-Vintage-70s-Beast-/170908429929?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item27caefae69

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pearl-Fiberglass-18x16-Floor-Tom-Drum-Satin-Blue-70s-/170907937139?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cae82973

http://www.ebay.com/itm/149-WORLD-SHIP-Vintage-70s-PEARL-Fiberglass-Fibes-Drum-Set-Ludwig-Vistalite-/170906044846?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item27cacb49ae

In all three of these listings, not only is the starting bid set astronomically high (in other words, if a buyer is patient enough, he WILL find the same drums for significantly LESS) but the descriptions make me sick!! They're not accurate and truthful, either by design or ignorance. Even though I regularly sell on eBay, no doubt it is a place where "let the buyer beware" has significant meaning!

Now, for a positive example:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Fiberglass-Pearl-18-floor-tom-drum-/261096728971?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item3cca93e98b

This one started at $0.99 with no reserve. Watch this one. It will bring a "fair" price when it's all said an done.

(No, this one is NOT mine, but I'm watching and may yet bid!)

Sorry for the rant. As you might have guessed, it's a slow day at work so far!!

Bill,

You and all others need to know that Amadeus 183, which is in Claremont, Ca. is either the new name for the seller known as "stewy" or "counter hoop" or is his partner/employee.

His real name is Zach and is well known on DFO. Although I have no dealings with them, Currotto has and he had a favorable mention.

Here's a few threads: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/search.php?searchid=1145104

I find them to be similar to pooder when it comes to pricing, but more respectful of the kits, as in they don't tear them to pieces and resell everything.

I'm with you on the glass kits, I picked mine up fairly cheap, although they needed a lot of restoration (cleaning and polishing) and I dig their unique sound.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I love the descriptions "beautiful fiber glass" "stronger than steel" very ambitious! I used to play a Pearl fiber kit with a 26" bass. Never had any problem getting heard over the Marshall Jockeys!

Hmmm... I've never bought anything from counterhoop, but have sold him some stuff (eBay transactions). And, I got my money fairly quick and didn't have any problems.

I didn't mean to slam anyone in particular, just get frustrated in the price gouging and mis-information in the descriptions.

And I guess this brings up one more thing though... maybe eBay ought to somehow "police" the name changes. I had an interesting situation come up just recently with eBay involving someone who had changed their eBay name... but it would be better posted in another thread, so I'll leave that alone (for now).

Well, the FG shells are not only loud and unique, but they do seem to be pretty much indestructable. I've dealt with a lot of them. The wrap and hardware might be shot and useless, but the shells always seem to be able to keep their integrity! Kinda reminds me of the old Timex ads...

Even though I've owned and played a W/FG kit for years, the FG kits are superior. I'm a firm believer that you can get just about any sound out of them you want, depending upon the type of heads you put on them and how much time you're willing to put into tuning them up. That's probably at least partly why their really popular with small recording studios...
