Identify Ludwig Kit

Loading...

Hi, I'm looking at a Ludwig and want to know if the more experienced can tell me about it. I though it might be a 70s kit but I'm not as experianced as you all... It has a 24" bass, an 18" floor tom, a 13" hi tom, and a 14" snare. He wants $450.

1. What do you think the date is?

2. What do you think the value is?

3. Do you think it still has the older type bearing edge and inner ring on the shells?

4. If I want that old school 70s rock tone (like Zep) or huge Dave Grohl (Nirvana) sound, would I be dissappointed?

Thanks!

Kit is early to mid 80's, definitely the "Dave Grohl/Nirvana" type. I think it's worth the price if snare is included and it's a Ludwig, if not a Ludwig snare, but a cheapy, I'd bargain. Kit is probably maple, if cymbals are included and bass drum pedal, bonus.

Another 2 cents.. I agree with BB..

Not an expert here at all... but based on the serial number I'd say post 1980 for sure. Look at the serial numbers tables under the "Vintage Drum Identification" link.

You know.. I'm kind of thinking maybe that is some parts of a larger 80's kit.

$450 for the drums and hardware seems like a decent to "good deal" (depending on snare and cymbals) and pretty typical ebay or craiglist price for what is in the picture.. but I don't know your drums so that is a very broad swipe at value.

Not a Guru... just interested..

Thanks guys. One more thing... I know the 60s and most 70s Ludwig and Slingerland drums had the inner wood ring around the inside of the drum shell at each end. What did that do for the sound and when did Ludwig stop doing that?

Oh, and the bearing edge... would this set still have the 60s-70s rounded bearing edge or a more modern cut? When did they change that on Ludwigs?

Thanks!!

The maple ring was a reinforcement ring used to...umm...reinforce the strength of the otherwise very thin, lightweight 3-ply shell.

I don't know about the bearing edge profiles for 80's drums, but all of the 3-ply shells had roundover bearing edges.
