all drumming friends,

I am calling on all my drumming brothers and sisters to help me identify some history or at least on the trade mark. I have inserted several pictures of the drum. The drum is all wood with wood rims. It is 15 x 16 in tom drum.

Hi,

What I found out with Google:

Gustav Nejedly had a 'Manufacture of music instruments' back in the 1930s in the small German town Markneukirchen. The company was founded in 1892 in the (former Eastern Germany) town Leipzig under the name 'Gustav Nejedly & Co., Spezialhaus für Jazzband-Instrumente und Effekt-Instrument modernster Art' (translated: Gustav Nejedly & Co., special house for Jazz band instruments and effect instruments of top modern shape).

You may also ask Fritz, a kind mate, who knows a lot about old German drum manufacturers, here:

the badge is interesting from the standpoint of its form. maybe it was a style but two other German drum companies had triangular badges in the 1940's----Sonor and Deri. Both later changed to a script logo.

i would be interested to know whether it is actually 15x16 or rather what the accurate measurement in cm. is. it would be very odd for a German drum of this age to be in inches. this is what I see being sold as a Pauke Trommel in Germany, which kind of translates as tympani drum, probably the same as tom drum. Dresdner Apparatebau and Lefima still mfg. such drums for concert and drum corps. it might be what eventually morphed into the tenor drum. old paintings and illustrations show such a drum being played slung. the floating head design with handled t-rods is incredibly practical , when one considers that the drum was fitted with skin heads. having used these all my life , I can attest to how quickly they can respond to humidity and become completely unplayable. six quick adjustments can bring the heads to life again in about the same time that a modern guitarist can fine tune between songs.

Just for your kind information:

With 'Pauke' we mean the same drum as 'Grosse Trommel' and it can be translated as 'bass drum'. (We don't say 'Pauke Trommel' but 'Pauke' only and it is an old wording for a 'kick drum/ bass drum' in a drumset, too.)

'Trommel' is just a general word for a drum in Germany: this can be any kind of drum from the African djembe to snare drums etc..

The German word 'Timpani' is used only for an orchestral 'Pauke', which mainly are manufactured in copper (those with the half-round shell and the mentioned t-rods).

The word 'Tom' (or 'Tomtom') we know only in the context of a drumset as 'rack tom' or similar.

Perhaps this helps a little bit clarifying (if not: let me know, please).

Gustav Nejedly comes from an old large family of musicians - the German-speaking Czechs in Moravia (earlier also named as "Sudet Lands"). Part of the family moved to Dresden after the WW-1st.

Currently, the direct descendants of the family members Nejedly lines are also famous musicians in ČR and Germany.
