I just picked up this Tama Royalstar kit made in Japan
What type of wood is this ?
Thanks,
Dag
Luan on the inside and middle plies. Shina on the outside ply. The stripes are painted on.
........!!!
That fancy striped paint always fools lots of us. Look, it goes through the bearing edge profile. Clearly not the grain of the ply.
I found one of these kits and it was pretty banged up with gouges and scratches
I figured I could sand out some of the damage and re-finish
But then I realized the striped grain pattern was just applied to the inner and outer plies
so to keep the original Brazilian grain look I used Old English scratch repair for darker wood furniture It did make the kit much more presentable, but it does need to be reapplied to the heavier rash from time to time. they are fairly rare kits and real clean examples are perhaps few and far between. these of mine are what they are.
