The only Ideal Drum Co that comes up in searches is one that makes drum barrels and drum containers.

Judging by the wording, "World's Supreme Quality" and "MADE IN JAPAN" stamped under the above, the drums were a stencil of Star. Check with Mikey or Ralf but, I'm quite sure they were Stars perhaps, mid to late 60's.

I have an Ideal snare that's in great condition after a clean up but it's really kind of a piece of junk. It's your typical low end MIJ stuff. Looks great from the outside but you could easily poke your thumb through the shell to get a look at the inside. Of course I'm only speaking of this drum as I don't know if it's the same for all Ideal drums.

if it's in that bad condition, replace the shell, kick it up a notch with a maple or mahogany shell. Swap out all the hardware, including the wrap, if it comes off clean.

Burn the shell.

With all due respect, I didn't say it was in bad condition. It's actually in great condition. My point was that it's a thin soft shell to begin with and was never anything to write home about. I like your idea about swapping it out for a nice shell but it's kind of like that little pig with the wheel chair for it's hind legs that's been all over the news and internet. It's useless but it's so cute it's worth saving.
