ID Help! Vintage Pearl kit.

Loading...

Hello gang,

I was looking for some help to place a year and make on this kit. I've been digging all over the web but I can't find one quite like it. Recently been told it was a possible 1966 Pearl President. Yes the Presidents did get their start in 66 and then were revamped with the fiber shells and mass produced a few years later. However my kit is a bit different than most Presidents kits. It appears to be 9ply shells. It is possible there is an inner fiberglass ply but not 100%. This kit has a 22" bass with matching wood hoops as opposed to a 20" bass with inlayed metal hoops. I go into detail on this video. Right now the kit is fitted with Ludwig Atlas spurs but I do have the original hardware. L-arm, rail mount and spurs. I'm waiting to hear back from OsakaBop but in the meantime if anyone on here knows their stuff...gimme a buzz.

That looks like a really nice, original kit. I'm going to say that it's late 60s due to the tom mount not being a clip style. It looks like the Super Deluxe outfit from the '68 catalog with President lugs in Tiger Eye. That's my guess.

Thanks Andrew. Yea that was my first thought when I purchased this kit a couple years ago. I would tell other drummers at gigs that it was a 68 Super Deluxe. I'm just really asking around just because it seems unique. Maybe this was just fitted with leftover Presidents lugs? I'm pretty obssessed with trying to figure this one out. Could have been custom ordered in that time period. Anything is possible. Thanks for taking a look!

it could very well be a President. It might be in a catalog I haven't seen. There were some other anomalies at the time as with most drum companies. I used to have a kit in the same finish that had horizontal grain Birch shells and sticksaver style hoops.

I just picked up a vintage Pearl President that i believe to be from between 1969-71, as the original owner i bought the kit brand new new in '72.. I'm in the process of doing some maintenance on it, and will post pics when i'm done.. A buddy of mine and fellow forum member drumfx, has an identical kit, only it was a Beltone, which Pearl made anyway, so it is the exact kit and finish, but i believe his kit has re-rings.. I thought about buying it from him, until i found my Pearl Pres.. Here's a link to his ad for the kit.. Sweet kit BTW ! Congrats.. ;)

The thicker shells like you have there are 1968 and later. This is true for both Pearl and Star - as they both made the transition at about the same time 1967-1968 = so I pretty much say

Thicker shells - 1968 and later

Thinner shells with rerings - 1967 and earlier.

I have a Pearl made Whitehall (in this same wrap) with the thinner shells 1967 or earlier.

Your kit looks great and is sure to turn heads! 10 lug snare - Rockin!! In regards to the SNARE (only) I have found that generally the thicker MIJ shells sound a bit better than the thin shell ones - but I honestly have yet to really try to properly 'set-up' a thin shell snare with proper heads and edges inspected/perfected. Someday I will get around to it!

When it comes to the toms and BD, I prefer the thin reringed shells - but have had some great sounding thicker shelled toms/BDs as well. The thinner reringed shells have a bit more bottom end and thump better - but (re: BDs) with the head technology we have these days - even the thicker shelled ones can sound great!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
