Both. And don't forget the player and audio engineer. There's a lot that can be done in the studio to greatly effect the outcome of not only drum sounds, but all instrument sounds.

This clip sounds to me like a medium tension tuning on batter and reso heads. What does that mean exactly? Well, not cranked and not floppy. Also, the batter head he likely used was a Remo emperor or a Remo CS dot.

Check out this solo:

thats the way i use to tune my snare 40 years ago turn the lugs just tight then add a 1/2 turn more or so, i have a built in torque wrench in my fingers and the bottom just a little bit tighter or so about 1/3 more and tape on the batter side come to think on it i still tune that way i always have a nice pop little ring except now i use a z ring 2 inch and no tape. sometimes and this is on a metal snare, oh remos for sure, coated for batter side, i have a maple sonor force 5x14with moon gel and it sounds very sweet like that too dont play it much picked at a pawn shop im into my super classic cob now i play it with nothing on batter side just factory muffler it is in its own world all by itself good luck hope this helps

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
