I passed on a Star set tonight

Found a Star set on CL tonight. It was a four piece in Fibre Gold Pearl wrap and a snare drum with a date stamp of Feb 2, 1967. I’m not really interested in non-USA drums but I knew from past readings that Star are decent vintage import sets so I thought what the hey, I investigated further. The snare turned out to be a Ludwig Acrolite keystone badge. Bass pedal and high hat were “Pro Pedal” and also included a two-legged throne as pictured in the Star catalogs. Had junk no-name high hats and ride cymbal but also had a 20” Paiste Forumla 602 with 6 rivets. Everything was in fair shape with medium rust here and there and needed a fair amount of work/TLC…more than I wanted to tackle. If the Formula 602 wouldn’t have had the rivets I probably would have jumped on it for the $150 firm price. Will I regret walking away?

Here’s the phone pics that were sent to me…not the greatest but all I have. The extra snare pictured was part of Ludwig student kit with bells and stands and was not included.

Man...that Acro is worth more than $150. I would have taken it @ $150 just for that...not to mention the kit/602.

If I could have gotten just the Acro and 602 I would have been all over it. Seller wanted to sell everything together. I don't need another set right now or a ****ed off wife.:(

What would the Star stuff alone be worth?

The Acro probably needed the most work...split heads and a fair amount of rust on the P-83 and hoops.

As mentioned, the pic of the snare was another snare (not the acro) and 'was not included'. So, we can't look at that to determine condition of the Acro. Since the Acro is worth 150 alone, it would be a no brainer to grab it all IMHO. If the wife would kill you to bring another whole kit into the house, you can always will your drums to me ;)

Seriously though, you could have stopped at a friend's house on the way home and dropped it off there and your (drummer) friend could have an MIJ that would likely be KILLER when restored. Whenever I can buy ABC for the value of A alone, I am happy to flip it and keep the rest for FREE. -done it many times....that's how you build a collection with no capital to work with.....our drum knowledge is valuable alone.

The 602 is worth good money even with rivets.

My first thought when reading this was OH MY GOD, YOU AREN'T JUMPING ALL OVER THAT!!!!

.......not to mention that the MIJ hardware (flat-based, BD pedal, etc.) is really cool to have to have an all MIJ kit.....or at least actually quite sought after by MIJ fans....and could easily be sold. In fact, sometimes that MIJ flat based stuff is indeed hard to find.

you could buy the whole lot for $150 and put everything apart from the Acro and 602 on the side of the road as trash, then someone will pick it up and write here on the forum about the incredible trash score they made. That way we have 2 happy forumites;).

i simply meant that keystone acrolites are usually the most desirable of the acrolites...
