I just got this Pearl snare

Loading...

I have yet to own a good wooden snare as I would love to experience a Luddy Jazz Fest to hear those Ringo rim shots, but I really enjoy my COB 5X14 Jupiter. It has always delivered an exceptional sound. I hope you enjoy yours as much. I agree, a highly under-rated snare. Additionally, I came across a 3 piece about 10 years ago in the same wrap as your new purchase. It is a knock-out wrap (especially after the VDF polishing treatment) and the wood-fiberglass sounds just woody enough to be warm and yet good projection which is what Pearl's fiberglass shells were all about.

Looks like this set was in the '72 catalog, but not sure if these had double FT??? At any rate, my set if compared to yours as a "complete" set, is missing the 13 inch rack tom.....

Here's some pics to compare.

I hope you dig your blue swirl Pearls as much as I do mine.[Attachment: 101092]

Indeed there was a 16-18 Ft kit....

I had Just the 5 piece Powermate kit for a few years... Back then, I did a couple of "upgrades"? which improved the kit (IMO).... Wooden BD hoops & a brass Slingerland Sticksaver batter rim on the snare...

Cheers

John

I got the kit and my enthusiasm is a bit curbed. The kit looks great and sounds good, but, the seller failed to mention several areas of the wrap where it is bunched up at the lugs (mostly on the bass drum) and a four to five inch wrap tear on the floor tom. For $450 I guess I am ok, but who says "the wrap is in great shape" when it has these issues. One thing nice about Guitar Center is that I can return with no hassles. I think I'll keep them though. The drums sound pretty bad ass and no one but me will ever see the blemishes.

Verminator, I would not sweat the wrap bunching at the lugs and elsewhere, it is the same with mine and I recall reading somewhere here that it was common with that wrap. I had some fair success removing the lugs and heating the wrap with a hair dryer and using a needle nose pliars to pull the softened wrap taut until it cooled. It was a lot of work and after doing the toms, I passed on the bass drum. Fortunately the wrap is busy enough to hide the ripples as you can hardly tell there is a fair amount of bunching on the bass drum in my.previous pics.I simply love the wrap too much to let it bother me. Hope this helps. D.

The drums really do sound great. I was comparing them to an early 70's Ludwig kit and they sound at least as good if not better. The wrap really is killer.

Wow, paid about $200 shipped for my Stew Copeland 5'', what a great GC score!

Recently I picked up the next size up - 6 1/2'' deep - in a CL deal for next to nothing ;)

Found it!!

Hi Eric and rest of the guys on this thread,

I recently got the 4514 Copeland snare for £50 with a broken Gladstone throw off, since then I got a replacement from a £30 6.5" deep version and swapped throw offs over, I also re skinned with Remo heads and fitted a cast batter hoop. Man what a snare, the guys in the band commented on the sound positively, crosstick sound too as great.

Just a question of age though between the 2 drums.....the Copeland has 3 broad lines running around it with the sound hole at the bottom; and the 6.5" has 3 lines but tighter together and a sound hole in the centre. I take it the Copeland snare is late 70s and the 6.5" is more like mid 70s?

See 1st snare on left and 5th one over for comparison.
