How to trim off wrap?

I just got loads of info from y'all about a Dixieland snare that I couldn't fit the heads on. Well...

Not long ago I bought a Leedy-Slingerland snare. It has the same issue, though bot as badly.

It has been re-wrapped. When I put new heads on - again, Aquarian Vintage (no, not Modern Vintage!) they were prtty snug. I sanded away some of the hoop on the head, and that helped. But I'd like to trim away some of the wrap.

Guidance? I have a flexible ruler/straight edge, and an X-acto knife...

what suggestions so I can get it right?

Thanks!

I've done it just marking a line, and using a fresh utility knife. Used a rim slid down as a line to mark. If you're going to be doing some, Drum Foundry has a nifty wrap trimmer. http://www.drumfoundry.com/p-3307-df-wrap-trimmer.aspx

Cool. That will work. On the Gretsch shell, I didn't think I could even get a head to sit evenly. But I have them installed on the Leedy...

Do you leave the head on as a 'straight edge" for the utility knife?

May be helpful for those of us with manual dexterity...uh...issue.

Many thanks!

We need to buy one as a group project. Or, one person buy it and rent it!

You know, on my RB set, I just trimmed the overlap under the head. That was enough to fit Remo ambos. Might try that first. If it doesn't work, then just carry it around the drum....
