How To Ruin A Great Day

Loading...

A guy offered to trade his 5-piece Slingerland Phantoms for my Slingerland Classic Rock Set. I go and check them out: they were almost perfect! The snare has been repaired along it’s seam, but it looks as good as the other drums. I don’t see a single scratch or crack on the drums.

We do the trade. I cased them up and drove them an hour to my home. They sat for a few hours, then I commence to setting them up.

Bass drum first, insert the spurs, attach the pedal. CRACK! The bass drum formed two curved cracks emanating from both screws of one of the spur mounts! I had elevated the reso hoop half an inch like I have always done with my conventional drums.

Deflated, I continued setting up the set, and the snare makes a ‘pop’ sound as I am setting it on the stand. A short crack coming from the strainer!

These drums live a charmed life for 45 years, then I get my grubbies on them and disaster strikes.

I backed away, checking for hidden cameras in my house. What the heck???!!!

So sorry to hear of your misfortune!!

My guess, is the seller over-tightened the hardware when he had them apart to detail them...When the drums were moved from their location, traveled the distance, set back up and possible climate/humidity change, all added to the unfortunate end result...

Can you post pics?

Cheers

Condolences. I've always had fears like this that have kept me away from trying anything acrylic.

Like all photos of clear items, it’s kinda hard to see.

The first photo is of the left spur mount, taken from the front (reso side) of the drum, through the head.

The second photo is of the right side of the strainer.

I will repair the cracks with Weldon. Then lay on the floor in a fetal position and suck my thumb...I knew that acrylic drums had potential to crack, and that has kept me away from them, too, but come on!!

I also assumed it was due to a change in temp, but I think that was minimal.

I suppose “lemon laws” don’t apply to drums...such a strange turn of events...maybe you angered the Phantom! My only experience with the Slingerland Phantom was answering an ad on CL for one only to find out it was a MIJ Star acrylic kit...it did have Slingerland heads on the toms, and a Slingerland snare stand though. Long story short, I still ended up buying the kit, and the silver lining is that researching the MIJ kit, and how to refurbish it, led me here to the VDF and now I have four more vintage kits in my basement...come to think of it maybe the Slingerland Phantom is a curse!!!!

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.

The guy I traded with was stand-up. He was mortified and offered to ‘untrade’ them. I’m keeping ‘em.

I managed to sneak up on them today and played them gently. They sound great!

Glad to hear there is a happy ending! Still, very unfortunate that this happened.

Yeah, I plan to just hang on to them. They may never leave my house until after I croak. I already ordered the weldon and watched a few videos on how to do it. Maybe they won’t keep cracking like nervous potato chips and I can really enjoy them. Trying to stay positive.

Thanks, everyone, for your condolences.
