How To: Repairing the Shell

Loading...

If this is a snare, you could send it to me, and I'll do it and post a vid. I don't currently have a drum in that condition, although I have done them like this. As a matter of fact, my red sparkle was like that, and it sounds killer now. And the red snare you have is going to require some very extensive shell work. It may have to become a donor. I don't see any way short of adding some new wood at the strainer point to get it back to where you can install and use the strainer again. On the flipside, it is an MIJ and you won't ever lose money on it because of a shell repair:D...

Looks good. We want to see the finished drum! A vid of repairing a seperated re-ring would be good (helpful to me, anyway, as I have one I have no idea how to get back together!)

That was pretty dam cool John! Masking tape is a good way to prevent any glue or epxoy form getting on the finish, also a piece of a drum shell works well to put between your clam and the shell, to prevent a flat spot that may be created by the clamp. just my :2Cents: Good Job!!!

Hi!

I really like the passion you put repairing those vintage drums. I've recently bought 3 vintage ludwigs circa 1970 (13/16/20) and really love their sound. Though, toms have a problem: used to be concert toms, and someone placed slingerland lugs on the resonant side of them. Obviously, Ludwig lugs won't fit (already tried it). I've got a couple questions for you. Is there a chance to fill those holes in order to place Ludwig lugs? Is the sound going to change? Here are some images of them:

Thanks!
