How to remove the crud under the wrap?

Once you have the wrap off a drum what is a good product to remove glue and other crud.

My friend took off the wrap on a 80's Ludwig (Black and White badge) set. He said there is a black adhesive that seems to be in the grain of the wood. Anyone have any advice on getting this off.

He is looking to do a stain on the natural wood finish and wanted to practice on a cheaper kit before some nicer shells.

I use Crepe rubber to remove the contact cement. Oh! and LOT OF PATIENCE TOO!!!!!!!!!!!

If someones has a better trick please share it!
