How to make a floor tom cut in half back whole again?

Loading...

I own a Yamaha D-20 set in Red Pine without 14" floor tom. I was offered a matching color 14x14 tom shell but it's been cut half into two snares (8" and 6") at some point. I don't know if the shells have snare beds.

I was thinking of putting the halves back together - is there a way to do this? Or does this make any sense at all? There's also many many additional holes in the shells which would have to be filled.

I have seen someone do this before. Can't remember who or where but think they used a "step" cut in one half of the shell to fit into the other. I thought it was a great idea. It would shorten the drum slightly but should be a fairly secure and stable fix once glued providing the shell is still in round. Of course you'd also need to address the snare beds, bearing edges and fill the holes. Quite a project and challenge but no reason to think it could be not done?

I reckon I'd tackle that ok as a project... A main consideration would be how much the pieces have warped since the bisection...

Cheers

Thanks for advices! The method that FFR428 explained seems quite good and easy to make.

If I get the price right I'll buy this for a project.

Any expectations how it will sound like when put back together? Slightly shorter sustain maybe?

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Maybe after rejoining the two pieces, fill in the holes and do a rewrap on the tom

What's wrong with buying a 14x14 shell and staining it to match your kit?

That cut up piece of swiss cheese will never make for a great looking, or sounding drum. Even if you manage to piece, fill, and plug it back into one piece. What then? Try staining those plugged holes, seams and snare beds to match the rest of the shell, it ain't going to happen.

Save yourself the time, expense and grief, buy a 14x14 raw shell and go from there. That or wait for another Yammy shell to come along.

Disclaimer: My 'opinion' and $2.50 will get me on a bus... :D
