How to date Black Label Paiste 2002 Cymbals

Loading...

I just purchased a 1957 WFL drum kit that was special ordered by CBC Radio Canada in their Vancouver studio back in the day. The kit came with some Paiste and Avedis Zildjian cymbals. The Avedis Zildjian cymbals have no "Made In ______" engraved on them? The Paiste 2002 are stamped with black ink 2002 and have the following serial numbers:

- 18" Crash 507149

- 18" Medium Crash 438607

- 15" Heavy Hi-Hats 542232 and 542233

Where can I go to date the cymbals by serial numbers?

I'm relatively new to Paiste cymbals having purchased as nice used set of Red Label 2002 14" Sound Edge hi-hats last summer.

Thanks,

Barry

Yes, the woman who sold me the kit, bought them at an auction in Vancouver back the the late 70's. She toured around BC with the kit for a number of years, and added a couple of Tama Superstar toms (12" & 18") with a natural wood finish in the early 80's to compliment the 20", 16" and 13" WFL shells. She also purchased a new 6.5" x 14" Ludwig Black Beauty Supersensitive snare in 1977. It was a great purchase, as I love all the parts. I wish she had purchased the matching bass drum for those Tama toms. They are beautiful drums, looks like maple interior/exterior ply's, thin shells, sound very nice and I will not be using them with the WFL shells.

Back to CBC Radio Canada and the shows that these drums were used on. Back in those days, she told me that CBC recorded programs live and thus had many instruments to accommodate whatever the show required. She did not know much more than that, but the 13" tom has a sticker that reads: CBC Radio Canada (then a serial number). Probably to keep track of there inventory? In any event the old tubs have a maple exterior with a walnut stain, a mahogany interior, 3 ply's with re-rings and do sound fabulous, even with older heads. : ))

I would post some pics, but mine are too large for this site, and it's a pain in the butt to re-size.

Cheers,

Barry

OK Mike, thank you. But how do you know that? I want to be able to identify these cymbals in the future, as I want to buy some more Paistes. Is it the first number of the serial numbers?

Thanks Blair. When did Paiste start using serial numbers? Is there a site dedicated to vintage Paiste cymbals with info on the different models?

I saw Mike at the bottom of your message and thought that was your name, sorry.
