How old / authentic is this Slingerland snare? Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all well and maybe can help me with a little issue I have:

I've got this beautiful 13x5 Slingerland snare, which I bought about 6 years ago from a drummer colleague (whom I deem trustworthy), who said that it's from the 60s. See pictures here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_XvZkH3wlpfSWhjVzF3bldLSWs

A few days ago I put it on ebay, after a little internet research regarding the badge and serial number, which seemed to fit the information of my colleague: Black & Brass Niles Badge + ser.no. 213474 -> probably late 60s.

But now I received some messages by people doubting the drums age, arguing for instance that Slingerland didn't do 13" snares in the 60s at all. Since I honestly never have been the biggest vintage drum geek myself I don't really have the profound knowledge to debate that, I just trusted the infos by the guy I bought the drum from.

So my question would be, if somebody here can help me specify the authenticity or the age of the drum by looking at the pictures I made. If you need a closer look at some details, just tell me and I will try to provide.

All help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

Hi haarpweapon... and Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for providing the detailed pictures, which really help to let us know what you've got. Correct that Slingerland wasn't offering 13" drums in the 60's. What you have is an Asian-built snare drum offered online by Musicyo in the 2000's. The 60's badge was added by one of the previous owners and definitely NOT original to the drum. Musicyo offered some very nice Slingerland snare drums, many of which were real bargains!

Thanks for the quick and helpful reply, Mark!

So I guess I'll have to call off that ebay auction for now... :-/

+1 with idrum4fun on this one. The badge is late 60's the rest is not. 5-ply shells not available in the 60's. The WMP wrap is not the 60's version. 60's hoops are COB, these are probably COS (a magnet will stick). The strainer is not the 60's version. The knob and lever are different. Also, 60's strainers turn clockwise to tighten the snare wires. My bet is your strainer turns counter-clockwise. No problem selling it if it is represented honestly. Good luck.

slingerfan!

Thanks for including all the details that I was aware of, but did not list. Should really help our new member to know exactly what he has.
