I been talking to a few drummer friends about this. Heres the question say a 1940's snare drum it could be a Ludwig,Slingerland, ete. How many times do you think a drum has been sold from new to now? 5,10,15,20 times or more....Mikey

How many more tiiiimeees, treeeeaat me the way you wanna do...

Uhm.

I think that, say, 1940s drum would have been re-sold less times than 1960s one, because when drumming became more common hobby, 1940s drums weren't much in demand -young drummers would rather buy a new MIJ or something, I'd think.

I'd agree with Gilnar, the re-selling of any drum would be higher in later years because of the ease of the market place since the internet. Also, people tend to impulse buy more often these days than in the 40's where personal economics didn't allow for reckless spending.

So, I'll say the drum has been sold and resold at least 10 times with the latter 6 sales in the last 5 years.

If you don't mind me asking but 30-40's drums related. Overall would you say sales of these era drums are.....

More expensive?

Rarity of items and harder to find?

Just a smaller market?

All of the above?

Other than ebay and some vendor sales I don't see much price wise in the general market for these. But was curious what everyone else thinks.

I find myself mostly dealing with drums from the 70's. Most of the drums I find have two previous owners. The normal story is that the seller I meet has eather been given the drum from the original owner, or is selling a drum that belonged to his father, uncle, or neighbor. So even if the drum is from 1930-1940 I find it hard to belive that a normal drum has had more than 5 previous owners.

American made products in the 40's weren't viewed as disposable luxuries by those consumers. Furthermore, they weren't the entitlement-minded people that we are now either, and they didn't spend above their means. IF they were buying it, they needed it and they were used to buying things that would last. Conversely, we now buy two thousand dollar televisions hoping to get four or five years out of them before they go, etc, cell phone every six months or a year, etc. We now are a disposable society and treat our goods as just that. And, we are also an entitlement type society now that feels that we "deserve" everything and spend above our means only to have to sell acquired possessions a little down the road to make the payments on whatever we have left that we want to keep.........

So, given this difference in consumer mentality, I would have to assume that the older stuff didn't change hands nearly as much as the newer items have.
