Alright guys. Thats enough ripping on the clamshell. I know it sucks. I still want to put this thing together so it is as original as possible.Lets think positive!!! Everyone join hands and chant with me....Mikey, Mikey, Mikey, Mikey!-Ad

It doesn't suck.... yet.

When you have it all put together and installed.... that's when it will suck.

From kevins

Possibly someone drilled holes to thread a snare cord through, since they were using it as a butt, with the Zoomy strainer installed on the other side.

Hey Kevins,To me the hole's on the side of the strainer should be like a hex rod with one screw to hold the snare wires on?? the bottom of the strainer looks wrong to me all the ones i have seem have the brass rod with one screw...Also if the drum is a 50's r.k. the strainer that adam posted has the wrong clam shell on it to me it's a pant.pend. on the side would date the strainer in the 30s' right??...Mikey P.S. Adam did you get my list email??

The patent pending stamp was present until '55.

In '56, the attachment changed from being screwed directly into the casing to using the swivel rod (that's the kind mine is), but the holes for the rod would be at the very bottom edges of the casing... not further up like T-Bright's.

All this stuff is covered in Dr. Wenk's article in the Drum Guide, and that is where I am drawing these statements from....

Hey Mike, thanks for the gift of the mounting piece and the cowbell !!

The mounting piece didn't quite work.... just a little off, but I was going through a parts lot purchase I made about a year ago, and found the right piece. So the cowbell has a new home on my RKs.

Love 'ya man !!

Thanks kevin, that has clear things up.The only strainers i have worked with and seen are the two on the far right, with and with-out the rod at bottom..Do you know also that many 60s M.I.J. drums used that type of strainer with the screw that screw's into the bottom of the strainer with-out rod...P.S. thanks for the kind word's bro..Mikey

I have 3 of these things, all from different decades, the one thing I have found with all of them is changing out the springs really helps. I guess over time the springs have lost some of their tension and new springs really help. You also have to "tune" each side evenly and there is a fine line with getting the right tension on the wires for the throw to work correctly. Once you get it dialed in they work really well, you just can't throw it together and have it work correctly.

I agree that if the Clamshell strainer was original to the drum then from a collector's display only (non-playing) viewpoint I agree that the original "Clam" of a strainer should go on the drum...I own a few Slingerlands with Clamshell strainers and would never think of changing them out...I think we would agree also on the Micro-Crapitive strainer on Gretsch drums...Utility, Presto/Speedway strainer on Leedy drums etc...
