How does Slingerland's Clamshell Strainer Work? Last viewed: 9 seconds ago

Can someone explain to me how a clamshell strainer works?

I understand that the adjustable tension butt pulls the snares outward and therefore up...but how does the strainer side work? I don't understand how it is capable of "throwing off" and I need to know in order to know what parts I need for my strainer.

I don't understand how the handle does anything. It doesn't seem to be attached to a mechanism that actually lowers the snares...it is just a bolt with a spring on it that presses against the body of the snare.

Help me to understand!

Hey Adam, hit Kevin up, he will be the one to ask, or VM2K. They seem to know more about Sling than most.

Gonedrumming Mike was nice enough to give me his phone number and so I called and he explained how it works. Seems like a horrible design. I understand why all the handles break off now. Metal on Metal is no good.

Now I just need to know if what I have of the strainer that came on this 50's Slingy is complete enough to just get a repro handle or if I need more parts. Seems like it would work as is...but those extra holes on the bottom of the thing still seem to be a mystery. Check out my thread in the "Restoring" section and let me know if you can tell me what they might be for!

Either way...Mikey to the rescue on the adj butt end and hopefully the parts for the strainer should I need any.

Thanks guys!

Possibly someone drilled holes to thread a snare cord through, since they were using it as a butt, with the Zoomy strainer installed on the other side.

Thanks Kevin! Thats a great explanation! I am going to guess that you are correct...and that I most likely don't need more parts. Anyone else?

Thanks!

Mike that is so funny, Why on earth would you take the 3 point strainer and replace it with this piece of WTF?? but they did so there you go!! you have to work with what you got with the clamshell!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Alright guys. Thats enough ripping on the clamshell. I know it sucks. I still want to put this thing together so it is as original as possible.

Lets think positive!!! Everyone join hands and chant with me....
