How do I tell what Model my Ludwigs are? "blue note" "super classic" down beat" etc..

Loading...

Hi everyone,

I'm Keith. I'm new here. I recently bought a set of 69' Champagne Ludwigs. They are in mint condition, im talkin museum quality. the only issues are some very, very minor paint chips on the bass drum hoops. All the wraps feel silky smooth and appear to have little to no fading. You can only tell when you take the hoops off and still its hard to see.

Details: 5pc. champagne. all keystone badges. Serial#s start with 72 except BD#2 , it's # is 70xxxx. round knob mufflers (white),unpainted interior

2 - 14x20 virgin bass drums (no mounting hardware, tom rails, or holes) they have the curved "disappearing spike" spurs and original batter and reso heads.

1 - 8x12 tom

1 - 9x13 tom ......one of the toms has original batter but in very bad shape

1 - 16x16 fl tom ...floor tom had ludwig striders heavy heads

double tom stand

2 speed king peddles

hi hat stand

2 original felt strips

All drums are dated Jul 8th 1969. floor tom date is not visible anymore. I payed $950 for everything listed.

So my question is, What Model are they? and what snare would complete this kit? I am looking at a 64-65' champagne Jazz Fest snare on ebay now, or would a supraphonic be the correct drum or other?

Let me know if you need more details on the kit, I may be able to get some pics eventually.

Thanks,

Keith

Hey Thanks alot!! I was checking Vintage Drum Guide and could not tell red from blue by the catalog descriptions. But your opinion about choice of snare was what I would have guess. The Jazz Fest snare is $575 on ebay, looks to be in great shape. does the price sound too high?

$575 is quite steep for a Jazz Festival, IMO.

Sounds like a great set. What you have is called a rock duo. I have the same set in psychedelic red. The cataloged snare with that set would have definately been a supra. A jazzfest would be nice though the price on that one seems too high as was mentioned earlier. I would just go with a supra if it was me. Here is mine.

Hi, keith congrats on your kit, the name for your kit is a downbeat kit, and as my fellow forum member just stated that is a bit high for a jazzfest snare, your questions about which snare is correct,, either the model # 400 5x14superphonic, or the jazzfestival would be correct, glad to have you with us,Cool1 OOPS I stand corrected didn't see the 2 bass drums correct answer is b

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Hey Guys, Thanks so much!!!

Just to make sure, when you said correct answer is B, did you mean about weather my kit is a "down beat" or "rock duo" or is it a "Down Beat Rock Duo" outfit? or the supra snare being the factory choice.

I will try to get some pics up soon.

thanks again!!!

Keith

Keith, what WFLKurt said. I'm wondering about the curved spurs--68? Seems a little early for those, but if Kurt's good with them, then so m I. Nice drums, nice condition--way to go..marko

They are 69's, does that make a difference? July 8th 1969 to be exact.

Nice drums!

To (partially) answer your question: generally, a Down Beat set = 12 / 14 / 20 (with Classic lugs). A Super Classic set = 13 / 16 / 22.

One thing I've never been sure of is whether there are identifying features other than size. E.g. are there any 13 / 16 / 22 Ludwig kits with Classic lugs that are not Super Classics? Can the resident Ludwig experts clarify?

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)
