How About This Guy?

I stumbled across him while searching for Buddy Rich videos. Pretty darn good, cool kit too.

I love it. Traditional grip, great playing, good drums, watchable... it's hard to copy Buddy's rolls: They were fascinating.

The Vistas sound great and the guy is really good. Does a pretty good job of replicating many of Buddy's licks. My only comment would be that he seems more concerned with being loud than with being as smooth as Buddy was.

Well, I look at it this way, there will never be another Buddy Rich and Buddy himself said, don't try to sound like someone else, learn from other drummers, but create your own sound. I don't think those were his exact words, but something similar. He also uses a double pedal, which of course Buddy never did, but again, this is his sound and his approach to drumming.

I really don't like seeing guys who try to copy Buddy's playing note for note, I like to see drummers who add there own flavor.

He was also influenced by rock music and I saw other videos of him playing in that genre. Buddy also said a drummer is someone who is comfortable playing any type of music. Well, he looks pretty comfortable to me playing jazz.

You know... I usually do NOT comment on things/subjects of this nature, but in this case, BR fan that I am!, I must. So...

Greg Potter was "chosen" to drive the current Buddy Rich Big Band.. ( which has been out touring for about a year I believe ) .. and a LOT of Buddy Rich fans cried FOUL at his being chosen to sit upon the coveted drum throne that was Buddy Rich's. That said, JR is of course correct in that Greg is coming from a R&R background.. ( certainly easy enough to see that ) .. but, he has immersed himself into the "style" somewhat, of Buddy Rich. Thing is, where there ARE some other guys that would really fit this band/style perfectly, Greg happens to also be together with Buddy's daughter Cathy. They are indeed... an item. I suspect that had a little to do with his being chosen for the drum chair in this band. That all said though, the guy can play!, and he has chops. Perhaps a tad more "pneumatic" of an approach than a real BR aficionado would like to see, but he can certainly play! My only real complaint is...

... he has one of my Slingerland t-shirts, and I want it back! ( absolutely true! ) Funny thing too, Greg Potter is quite diminutive, whereas I am 6' 1". Hmmm... maybe Cathy wears it as a nightshirt?

Right out of the box I have to say that the kid can play. That said, I think Tommy nailed it perfectly when he called his approach "pneumatic." Buddy's playing was so fluid and organic, it had round corners on it. Potter sounds angular and a little forced. There was only one Buddy, so I have to give this kid his props, but... he's no Buddy Rich!

John

PS - TommyP... you don't want the shirt back bro. You don't know where it's been, or 'whose pits' it has hosted!

Too many great drums to list here!

That's the whole point, there is no other Buddy! I don't care who is sitting on the throne, it makes no difference if it's a drummer who try's to copy Buddy's every move or a drummer like Greg Potter.

Purdie!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I suspect you're right. I DON'T know where it has been! Know what's funny though? ... back in the day, ALL of us were hot for Cathy Rich. She was so damn cute! We were/are approx. the same age, so... yeah, when she was in her late teens and through her 20's, and beyond actually... oh my. Can't be hurtin' Greg Potter any to have some of "that" DNA rubbing off on him!
