Hoshino Horror

Well Horror is not strictly fair but it does need some help.

I bought this kit because it was 5 minutes from my house, was $35 and I have no self control. A kit like this requires more time than is economically viable considering its resale value. And i won't be keeping it. As it happens, the seller refused to take my money saying I was doing him a favor by getting them out of his seaside garage where they have languished for the last 15 years. Sizes are 20/13/16 & 14 snare. It seems to have everything right down to the wafer thin Super cymbals and very rusty hardware.

Now this is the second of these cheap Hoshino kits I've had and they aren't up to much. They are generally below the quality of Star and Pearl of the same age and as I pointed out on another thread the bearing edges are nearly flat on all the drums. But the best thing about these drums is the wrap. Everything else may have been cheap but the wrap looks cool and is in great condition. Not a rip, split or chip on any of the drums. It's hard wearing stuff.

It may not be worth my time to clean them up but I will anyway and I'll post the results here.

I almost did the same thing with a worse off wmp Coronet kit. Or what used to be wmp. That finish didn't fare as well as yours. Self control only kicked in because I was on my motorcycle and couldn't take them home right then. I'll give them a call tomorrow, ha

it looks worse than it is but that box scares me. The hidden 13" hats are even redder. The bass mounted cymbal arm is in there though and probably a few spiders and cockroaches too

GAR - I should get a motorcycle

Those are cool! Can't beat the price either. I like the knockoff Slingerland RK streamliner lugs on the snare. Don't see those everyday. Nice little project and everything there is a big plus. Blue marine pearl is so cool looking! Or whatever they called it. :)

If the shells are that bad and the wrap is that good, I'd consider harvesting the wrap for a better kit. Even a Ludwig or other quality kit - if I was to re-wrap a quality kit, I'd rather use actual 60s/70s wrap, even from a cheaper kit, than any of the new stuff...just a thought.

I wish to heck they were local

or semi local

or semi semi local

I like the cool color of them and would definitely buy them just for that

The wrap is in absolutely stunning condition. I'd give em' some edges and see how they sing. If my snare is any indication, you will not be disappointed. I may have to make a You tube video of the snare in action.

I'm afraid I couldn't be less local

Mitch - that would be an interesting idea if I had a kit that needed a rewrap but in this case I'll leave it on this kit.

Arch - I don't have experience in cutting edges or the tools. I'll see how it sounds when it's back together
