By looking at the photo you posted..To me that set is a 80s M.I.T. set the lugs look like the ones that were on the Rogers 380 sets on the 80s so does the tom mount arm..Mikey

I have to agree with what O-bop, Jonni, and Mikey said. I dont think these are either worth very much or are very interesting as a 'vintage' set. They look like the more generic Taiwanese fare to me as well. Probably from around the late 70s-mid 80s, I'm thinking. There actually may be more 'history' in the collection of stickers on the shells... But again, throw some new heads on them and you might have a decent beater kit. (Just try not to pay too much for the heads!)

Thanks for the input everyone. No, I've no intention of spending a fortune on this kit, just thought I'd give the lugs a good polish and try and strip back to the wrap. From my limited knowledge I believe there were two Hoshinos (though one in fact wasn't Tama). Probably is just a cheap stencil. When I eventually get round to it, I'll post up some pics!

Tama Superstar, 22, 22, 16, 14, 13 Desert Burst
Premier Genista, 22, 16, 13, 12 Black Lacquer
Premier Genista, 20, 14, 10 and snare Black Lacquer

Does that kit SAY Made in Japan?Looks like MIT construction-Pearl-ish tom mount and arms,pseudo-beavertail lugs, but skinny, not like "chubbies"on Island Music drums and Gretsch Blackhawk. And Zolocote interiors, also like the two forementioned drums.I'd build it for the 24 bass, but I do silly things anyway.Spent 2 weeks rebuilding a worthless MIT kit,and love it.And rebuilt a less than worthless Tama Rockstar(1988)and practice on it every night. As time marches on MIT's will come into their own-I believe moreso the odd configuration, like a 24 bass.

Drums made by Hoshino Gakki never had a Hoshino brand name. Hoshino the brand was made by Hoshino Kougyou, completely unrelated to Star and Tama. They were also stencil brand manufacturers in the 60's and 70's.

Hi Marc!

Curious as to how you stumbled upon this thread from 9 years ago! BTW, I have your book and it's a great source for stencil drums!

Yes - I was the thread creator and this just caught my eye! Thanks for the info anyway.

For the record I never did go any further with that kit - partly because of peeps' sage advice on here but also because my friend changed rehearsal spaces and the kit went with him.
