I just took the bottom head off of this Marlin MIJ snare to discover that the snare beds are off center by a good inch, starting approximately in the middle of the butt-end and and ending and inch or so to the right of where the snare wires sit. I guess mondays are mondays in Japan too!
Holy botched snare beds batman!

You could extend the snare beds the rest of the way by hand, check/rework the bearing edges, install some 42 strand wires and play it. ;) Put a couple coats of poly on the inside shell to brighten things up a bit. The wrap looks like it's in great condition too.
I bet this snare could sound great with a little work.

Hey funkypoodle!
I'm attaching pictures of my early 70's Slingerland Student Deluxe, showing how bad the beds are in relation to the strainer and butt. I like to theorize that it was built on a Friday at 4:59pm and the workers said "let's crank out one more shell ASAP and get the heck out of here"!
