History behind Ludwig Copper Tom Toms

Loading...

I have a pair of Ludwig copper toms Ive had for over 30 years. When i got them the heads were animal skin. One is 13" x 6"- 6 lug and the other is 14"x 6"-8 lug. They have slide mount holders. They both have the brass ludwig keystone with no serial number. They and the lugs look like the ones on my 67 ludwig. They are open bottom rolled copper and the hoops are unfinished,(if i remember the hoops were covered by the skin, so there was no need to chrome them back then).

I was hoping someone on this forum might know when ludwig produced these drums. The only copper ludwigs ive seen are tippani drums which would be in the percussion section of an orchestra. Im new here and appreciate any info on these drums.

Sorry no pictures, I can take pictures with my phone and send them to someone who can post them for me. Chuck.

That is exactly what i have Jwsedens! Thanks for the link, i have the same stand as pictured. It makes sense they are 67 because i got them with my pink champagne sparkle ludwig kit, which is also a 67. For many years i played the 4 piece set with the 2 copper toms to the right of the 10" ludwig bass mounted tom. I never thought they were timbales. Any way of knowing how many years these were produced? Thanks again,

Sorry you did not get a response but never saw this before. That is 1958-1959 set of Ludwig timbales. They are steel made and Copper plated. Before this model the timbales were produced under the WFL signature and looked like this in photo model 1957. Later in 1958 they change the rims to a lighter aluminum like one you have on those timbales shown.

I've run into timbales converted to snare drums by adding lugs and parts.

I would think they are early 60's due to the pre-serial badges.

For what I see they are 1958-1960's model The 1961 came with metal rims similar to tom and snare Rims.

Hi,

I have set that was so bad when I got them I had to pound them back into round. The finish was gone. Put original Mod Orange wrap on them along with the Black Panther wrap. Tried to get them to match my set. They sound pretty good. They have the original badges from 1967. I was able to find an original stand to complete them.
