Hi Everyone -

Loading...

I have a chance to pick up a 4 piece Tama Rockstar circa. 1988 for $149. Sizes are 11 and 12 inch mounted toms, 16 floor tom and 23 ? bass. Seems to be kind of a silver-bronze wrap .Looks to be in great shape. Badges say Rackstar - made in Japan with serial number beginning with zero then 4 digits. Are these decent drums? Shell construction? etc. Thanks so much

Rockstars have always been decent drums. They made millions of them, and with good heads they sound good.

For $149 you can't go wrong, as long as they really are in great shape.

Not sure of type of wood or anything, but I do see `88 Rockstars are listed as having 9 ply shells.

The problem with older Rockstar kits is usually that they have been covered in decals and beaten to death and neglected, as if destroying the drums was part of the plan.

I was never a fan of the look of`80s Tama lugs and mounts, but tons of people love them.

i am still playing a Tama Rockstar from 88 Made in Japan! You have to look in wich shape they are. A Rockstar - is in my opinion one of the best affordable Drumset Tama ever built! Exellent Craftmanship whre used on this kits. The newer ones Made in Taiwan i can´t say anything, but i heard from a friend that it´s not the same Quality as Made in Japan!

With good heads you will have lots of fun with that kit. For 149 bucks you can`t go wrong normally.

I have an 89' set-12/13/16/22 and the shells are quite thin for an entry-level set. These have single separate lugs in the Sonor Champion style. The tom mounts and FT leg mounts are the "screw against the leg/arm" type which were easily and cheaply replaced with SP's from G.C.-same footprint with the "eyelet PULLING on the leg/arm". I also cut down and recut the edges on the mounted toms, as they were oversize-not my favorite. I'm OK with replacing some lower level parts, as this set is now as good as any for gigging-and sounds quite good!Burger Kin

I should add that the rims are HEAVY steel-like 2.3's ,the lugs are springless and the interior ply seems to be Birch-

Hy

here is a pic of my old Tama Rockstar DX Lady:-)!

I also made a few changes on it,like i put away the floortommounts from the bassdrum and closed the hole with a metal plate.I also put some rims on the mounted toms and put them on a Tama Doubletomholder!

I changed all the t-rods to ,modern tension rods and put maple bassdrumhoops on the bassdrum. Theres Remo Pinstripe clear on the Toms and an Evans E-Mad clear on the bassdrum, with an EQ3 Reso Head;-) The Konfiguration is 10",12", 16",18", 22"

For me and my needs the perfect Rocksound! Keep on Pl
