Hi all!

Came across this forum a couple of days ago, and am stunned!

What a great knowledge pool!

I still have, and still play (although not as well, or anywhere near as often as I used to or would like to...lol) the used set of Ludwig Super Classics my dad bought for me back in 1964. I've always tried to find out more about them, with little sucess. Until I stumbled across this and another site (not a forum). I have learned more in the past few days than in the past 46 years! Apparently, I have a Buddy Rich Super Classic produced somewhere between 1948 and 1952.

The set is in good shape, no mods at all, and still sounds fantastic. I have in the past used nox-on to clean up the hardware....well like once every 20 years...regardless if it needed it or not (believe me, it did). I think the time has come to get a bit more aggressive in maintenance and do some serious cleaning up.

The only hardware part missing (I think it broke off in 1967) is the strainer throw off arm. I'll have to try and hunt one down.

Meanwhile, I'll keep reading the posts, learning about the virtues of Whink, Bar Keepers Friend, and car wax.

Welcome Batterhead ! What a great kit to have had all these years.

Just a word of WARNING tho....this vintage drum site can become an addiction, so use with care :D

Welcome Nice to have you here with us. I'm quite new to this forum too. I joined maybe 1-2 weeks ago I believe. It really is a great forum. The people here are very friendly and know so much about drums. You will love it here. That snare of yours looks P.R.E.T.T.Y. sweet by the way.

Thanks for the kind words and the welcome!

Tubthumper, thanks for the warning, but too late I'm afraid. I've already missed 3 nights of World of Warcraft, and my wife thinks I'm MIA.

Kevins, I'll try to post some photos of the whole set soon. I should take some so I can have "before" pictures, to compare to the "after" clean up pics.

I do have photos of the set but they are from 1967...LOL

Ok, what the heck....I submit for your (possible) entertainment.

Well, the great disassembly and cleanup is complete. I think they came out pretty good. Got just about all the rust off, except for a few of the tension rods. Now to find a classic rock band and do some gigs!

Now I'm just wrestling with what to do about the cymbals. Clean or not?

I like the way they sound right now, but they could really use a cleaning. Ahhhh! this will make you nuts!

Awesome....

Did you find a throw off arm ?

Maybe a little mild soap and water and a sponge for the cymbals.

They photograph well just as they are.

Congrats !

Thanks Kevins!

Yes, I did find a throw off arm. Someone sold a later version of the strainer on Ebay. I picked it up and merely unscrewed the arm from it and put it on my snare. It's not period correct, being it's the round type with the rings and not the fluted type, but the throw off now works properly, something it has not done for a very long time...
