Help with wrap color

Loading...

Hey guys, this is my first MIJ vintage drum purchase. I can't believe the wealth of knowledge on this site. That being said - can anyone help me with the exact color name of this wrap? I've searched all over the forum, and cannot find an exact match. I'm thinking it's either a dark blue oyster, or maybe a blue swirl.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the MIJ world!

Ludwig's "Standard" series had a similar wrap called "Blue Strata", but I'm not sure if that lingo was also used on MIJ Drums at the time.

I believe it was called Peacock Pearl. MIJ drums had some totally cool finishes you didn't see on American drums.

Thanks DrumBob, but I just googled that color, and my wrap looks nothing like any of the pics showing peacock pearl. I do agree it's probably a 'one off' that was used.

I forgot to mention in my first post, if it helps at all - the kit is a Bollero, made by Pearl.

Hello yyc067

I think your drums are most likely Pearl made

The earliest Pearl chart I could pull up so far

was from 1968 and does not include that finish

I think I have seen that finish before used on a Hoshino K built kit

The trouble there is Hoshino K for as many thousands of drum kits they produced

There is unfortunately very little info on them catalogs, color charts, ect.

Yes Kenwood, it is a Bollero kit, made by Pearl.

I put the two together and It seems that in the sample pic the bands of darker shaded strata are wider than the more uniform bands on your drums

They are very close, the shade of blue is almost spot on!

yyc067 Yes they are close

I have Hoshino K made kits in my collection

all with similar uniform strata pattern

in red, green, and tiger eye your blue looks the same

nothing is set in solid stone with these little kits

I would bet the same wrap was used by more than one builder

Hi yyco67!

Attached is a picture of wraps offered by Pearl in their 1969 catalog. Your wrap might be a batch variation of the "Blue Grain Pearl".
