Help with vintage Hi-Hat Stand - John Grey Broadway Set

Loading...

I've been working on cleaning up and trying to assemble an old

vintage John Grey and Sons Broadway set.

I've run into some trouble with the hi-hat stand. The problem is the stand wobbles when I use the pedal. The stand will not stay balanced upright and even falls over when pedal is pressed.

The legs don't have rubber feet, and that would probably help. But I'm wondering if there is something else I'm missing here. I am hoping someone out there can help answer these three questions:

1. Is this the original hi-hat stand from the John Grey & Sons Broadway sets?

2. Do I have have the legs set up right? Basically, the bottom of the stand (center rod) is a little lower than the bottom of the feet, so it rocks.

3. Any suggestions on how to stop the rocking and stabilize the stand?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

Try adjusting to collar so that the bottom of the main shaft is off of the floor and the the main contact to the floor are the ends of the legs and the end of the pedal.

Thanks Barry. I can not figure out how to get the bottom of the shaft to move off the floor. Are you talking about the collar that sits just above the pedal spring? That collar only moves up, but doesn't allow me to move it further down anymore. There's even a little metal bump on the main shaft right above the opening where the pedal spring is exposed that prevents me me from pushing it down any further toward the floor.

There is another collar at the very bottom of the stand. that collar doesn't seem to move at all, there is no screw or anything to loosen it.

This image shows both collars, and the spring pretty clearly.

Any further advice?

I agree the legs should be at angles to the floor, or at least lower than the bottom of the main shaft, but they don't seem to want to go that way. Any suggestions? Am I missing something here? I must be.

Thanks again

Is the shaft stuck>? Try spraying some WD40 in there and see if you can move it. It sounds like the path is stuck and thats why it wont go down all the way.

I had this exact same issue with my gretsch stand.

Feet would help yes. Replacement feet can be had at your local or online music store.

Yes, the shaft does not sit on the floor. Steel wool and grease the shaft, grease pivot points. Stands of this type are not flat based stands, the shafts need to be off the floor at least an inch or two for them to work properly.

The stand is not part of the original kit. The pedal says Speed King, which is a Ludwig trademark.

Retsonic - wd40 did the trick. it was stuck where the leg supports are bolted to the legs. There was also a little metal bump that was keeping the collar from dropping down. Here's a pic of the fix:http://imgur.com/SDzaS

However- during this fix, the pedal became detached from the stand spring.

I have been trying to put the screw back into the top of the spring, but i can't figure out how to detach the pedal from the screw. it's awkward and near impossible to try to twist the entire pedal around to make that screw go it. Anyone have any suggestions about how to remove the screw from the pedal or to get it properly re-attached to the stand? Here are pics of the problem:

1. Screw hole at top of spring in main shaft where pedal should attach.

2. The screw, attached to the pedal itself.

Once i can get the pedal reattached to the spring, this stand should be ready to go.

Anyone got any ideas?
