Help with Snare I.D.

Loading...

Does anyone have a clue what kind of snare this one may be. It looks to be of some quality as it has reinforcing rings. Any help would be great....

I'm going to say late 60's MIJ/Pearl with a later model throwoff.8 lug is nice, more tuning range, but the bottom rim is wrong, should have a bootleg stick-saver.

Hi Howard. I am one of the collectors of MIJ snares that "lives" here. I have a stack of about 10 right now. Typically, in that condition, I would have to do a complete lugs off deep cleaning, 2++ hours at least, and replace the snare side or top hoop. It really depends on the collector, and the fact that there are many of us that try to keep the prices of the MIJ stuff reasonable so that everone can afford to "collect" and trade. IMO, that one is worth 30-35 in it's current condition. They are a bear to tune until you understand how they like to be treated. I usually start with the bearing edges on these thin shells. I will not change the contour, but I sand tham very smooth and than sand the interior of the shell and poly it. Nice wrap BTW.

If you are selling it, that would be what I'd pay. If it is on CL, and you are trying to buy it, offer 25 because it is not original, but don't walk if you can get it because that is a desirable wrap. If they are asking 50 or more, it ain't a deal, again IMO.

I took another glance at the top pic showing the bottom hoop. Is that thing bent? It really look like it is from here. If that is the case, I'd have to do a very thorough inspection before buying if I were you. If all seems good after that, you know you'll have to replace it for sure. I might have one of the sticksavers.
